Can't connect to any HTTPS service [problem returned]
« on: October 01, 2013, 01:47:52 PM »

I'm unable to connect to any website that uses https.  The browser will load for many seconds and then display a timeout error.  I can load the http version.  This happens on all OS's and devices (Win7, OSX, Ubuntu, iPhone, iPad, Kindle)

Is there some setting that would be restricting this in the router?

My router time is correct and is using time.windows.com ntp (same as my win7 box I'm on)

I upgraded the firmware:
DIR-655 Hardware Version: B1  Firmware Version :      2.11NA , 18, Jul, 2013

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

OK more details

As I was going through another reset, when I first get into the router it has the following under SETUP/INTERNET

My Internet Connection is: Dynamic IP (DHCP)
Enabled Advanced DNS Service: checked
then I'm guessing dlink dns, 204.194.232.200 & 204.194.234.200

At this point I was able to load https webpages, so success in a small step

I then changed that to static IP and both my ISP's dns and after another reset Google's dns as well as unchecking advanced dns service.  Neither was able to load https at that point

edit: hmm seems the https lasts only a short while, later after trying gmail again I was unable to open the webpage.

What in the router could be conflicting with HTTPS?  I've done factory resets till I'm blue in the face and currently havent changed a thing, https worked and then now it doesn't about 5 minutes later

well i left the router, cm, and turned off all devices (not sleep) last night, then this morning i powered on cm, watied, router, waited, pc, and https is working (and has been for about 30min) I'm using my ISP giving details/dns with no issue now

still don't get why https worked for a few minutes last night then went away while http worked fine the entire time

Is advanced DNS still enabled?

Most users disable this and either let the router get DNS from there ISP automatically or use this:
Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench

Hope it keeps workin well for you.

This just reared it's head again today.  I had been using the router successfully since my last post with no timeouts as well as about 2-3hrs this morning when all of a sudden I got a timeout from gmail.  Tried loading other https sites and nothing loaded.  No changes to the router have been made since my last post.

Plugged directly into the cable modem and I was able to access https again, once back into the router https stopped working.

Advanced DNS is disabled.  Although I'm fairly certain it has nothing to do with DNS.  I can ping google.com and amazon.com however once I try to load the https version of those sites it times out, the http version works fine.  This is true for any site I test with http vs https

What could the router be choking on?

I presume it could be the ISP modem. Somethings is not working between the ISP modem and the router. I would ask your ISP for a new updated router or try this router on a different modem at a friends or families place as a test if you can do that. My 655 is working for me however I don't have this particular modem. Ask the ISP to fully reset the modem and set it up or have them get you a native stand alone cable modem that does not have to be bridged.

After that, Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

After that, Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

What setting do you even remotely expect to handle http vs https?  Can you create a rule on your router to block access to outbound https/port 443?

If you can, I guarantee I do not have a rule like that as I have not touched any of the virtual server, port forwarding, app rules, qos, any of the filters, access control, or routing under advanced.  These are all factory defaults.

I dug up an old linksys 54g and that works fine, plug directly into the CM and that also works fine, plug the 655 back into the mix and it fails.  I'm going to be getting the run around from the ISP if they know it works with everything _but_ this router.

I've also be using this router for years bridged to my original router w/o wifi and never had issue until recently.  Starting to think this is a dud because I see no setting that would let you block https/443 outbound to a site while allowing standard http/80 going through.

I'm going to try another router in the meantime and see if I get blocked from https, afterall this router worked for the past few days and only choked today.  Need to start weeding out possibilities

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and inquire for help with them. This seems to be a configuration or HW issue.
