Intel Wireless 5300 ABGN
« on: May 20, 2009, 12:55:22 PM »

At the moment I have a Dell XPS laptop with Vista and unfortunately using Intel 4950ABGN wireless adapter. I have a hard time getting connected at 130Mbps and it often fluctuates to low speeds (sometimes even as low as 54Mbps). Now I am planning on getting an Intel 5300ABGN since it has the potential of reaching 450Mbps and obviously until routers incorporate this routers will still limit it to 300Mbps. I am wondering if people with the 5300ABGN do reach a steady 300Mbps with this router. If I get postive results I will have no problem purchasing this product.

Much more reliable with 5GHz.

Both Intel adapters will connect faster when accessing the 5Ghz wireless band.  If yoy connect on the 2.3Ghz band, then this wireless network must be set to AES only.  If the adapter detect TKIP, the Intel 4950 may be looked to 54Mb/s and the 5300 might never see the network.

I am connected to the 5GHz with the 4950 and I do reach max of 130Mbps but for some reason it fluctuates and for the most part stays at 78Mbps. I understand I will have a lot of interference since I have many wireless devices all in 1 corner but hopefully if I get the 5300 I will reach 300Mbps max and it will at least fluctuate above 100Mbps.

The 5300 will definately reach 300Mbps.  Certain criteria must be met though.  To reach the full potential, the 5GHz band must be used as well as channel bonding.

I just got a Dell XPS 1640 laptop with the Intel 5300 AGN card.  At first it only connected on the 2.4 GHz band at only 130 mbps but then I changed the properties of the card from '20 Mhz.' to 'auto' and now it occasionally hits 300 mbps and often stays at 240-270.  My D-Link settings are set for 'auto' there, I'm pretty sure.

I just got the adapter today and it connects perfectly at 300Mbps without any dropping or anything. Have been using it all day and enjoying the super speeds.
