Shareport Connects but doesn't print. Help.
« on: May 21, 2009, 01:33:52 PM »

Greetings,

I've upgraded my DIR-655 to Firmware 1.31, and installed Shareport 1.10. Shareport "sees" and connects to my printer HP-895Cxe. However, when I print anything (simple text file, etc.), the print just sits in the printer queue. The print queue initially states PRINTING the times out and states ERROR - PRINT.

I have two Dells side by side with Shareport installed on both. Both PCs can individually connect to the printer via Shareport. Both PCs experience the same problem with Shareport. If I unplug the USB cable from the DIR-655 and plug it into a USB port on either PC, the print in the queue "takes off" and prints just fine. I plug the USB back into the DIR-655, print again and the print just sits there.

I've tried reinstalling Shareport and setting the DIR-655 back to factory defaults. Same problem. HELP!

Try to reboot the router from the GUI

That's because Shareport disconnects before the printdata is sent to the router/printer. It stays in the queue and is not resent when seconds later Shareport reconnects again. Had the issue with 1.14 and was solved with 1.10.

You can try to:
- deinstall Shareport and manually remove all leftovers
- reflash 1.31 firmware and manually enter all config data (do not use the restore-file)

Thanks Ru-Fi-Oh & EddieZ for your quick response. I tried your 3 suggestions: reboot from the GUI, deinstall and remove traces of Shareport (via a registry cleaner - and reboots in between) and reflashed the 1.31NA firmware. I reinstalled the Shareport Utility with my A/V  & firewall software disabled.

Shareport detects & connects to my printer just fine. When I print a file, the print file just sits in the printer queue, until it times-out with ERROR - PRINTING. Connecting the USB cable to the PC works fine. As per other posts, I even tried turning on Multicast & setting Shareport to multicast 192.168.x.255. I still have the same problem.

What else can I do or try? Thanks!

In the Shareport program (printer specific options) there's an option to let Shareport connect only when a print command is given. With that option you can set the time the printer gets disconnected again from 10 secs to 300 secs. Try setting it up like that and set the time to 120 secs. Also, you can check the option to reconnect when connection is lost.

Well, I set the options to connect only when print is detected & the time to 120 sec. Results: These specific options work fine. When I send print to the printer, Shareport immediately connects to the printer. Unfortunately, the print still just sits in the printer queue. Shareport doesn't disconnect in 120 secs because there is still print in the print queue. If I manually disconnect, Shareport immediately connects again because there's still print in the queue. The options work great. Actual printing does not.

Also, I brought home a laptop (Win XP) from work. I set up my wireless network, installed Shareport, fire it up, and Shareport detects & connects to the printer. When I print anything from the laptop - same problem. Print just sits in the print queue until it times out and changes status to ERROR - PRINTING. I now have two desktops (Vista) & one laptop that fail trying to print via Shareport. The only common denominator is the DIR-655 router.

I've spent hours on this. I don't believe it's a configuration problem. Maybe if D-Link fixes the "connect" problem everyone else seems to be having via a new firmware release, it will fix my printing problem. I'm not holding my breath.

Well, I should have held my breath. I upgraded my DIR-655 to firmware 1.32NA Beta and... I can print! I never had a connection problem, I just couldn't get print from the print queue to the printer via Shareport thru the DIR-655 USB port. Now it works great.

The upgrade to firmware 1.32NA Beta did reset the router settingd back to factory defaults. Printing worked fine with the defaults. I restored my saved settings from 1.31NA with out a problem. Printing still works just fine. Thank you D-Link!

Well, maybe I spoke too soon. I've been using the new Beta Firmware 1.32NA fot the last 3 days. Basically, it is an improvement over firmware 1.31NA because it allows me to actually print (when I could not with 1.31NA). However, in my case, two issuse still plague firmware 1.32NA/Shareport 1.10.

1) I still need to reboot my DIR-655 router to get "connect" to work,  maybe once a day (I don't do that much printing).

2) The "Connect automatically for printing" and the subsequent "disconnect when finished printing" simply does not work (for me). With "Connect automatically" checked, when I print a document , nothing happends (even with 120 Secs). I always have to manually click "connect", before it prints. If I'm already manually connected, it prints fine too.

Although "Connect automatically for printing" is a nice feature (that should work), it's not that difficult to click the Shareport Icon and Connect. It does appear that Shareport 1.10 or Firmware 1.32NA still needs some work (hence the Beta name tag). I (optimistically) look forward to the final version of 1.32NA.

Well we know one thing for sure...if you reboot the router you will get some functionality. This seems to be the common theme.
If we perform an activity that requires the reboot it is a given the connection will hold in most cases.
Could it be a version issue with USB perhaps? Is there some obscure USB setting that could be botching up the works?
My machine would give the little gong noise when it detected the printer in the shareport client. Like the printer was connected directly.
I dunno if that makes any sense. LOL
But now since the flash and the client update, it doesn't do that.
Makes me wonder if it isn't a client issue.
I'm not a low level type so I dunno how a virt USB would squawk on the network.

I'm having the same problem unfortunately.

Everything was working fine and then upgrade to Firmware: 1.31NA; Hardware A3

Shareport (1.1.0 R1) detects my printer Canon MF4100 Series but when I print, it just hangs.

??

Please help, Dlink!

Hi, fellow frustrated printers:
I have both the 655 and the 4500.  they both had the same problem with print jobs hanging in the cue, doing nothing.  I read the earlier post that the 1.31 beta for the 655 worked so I dug the 655 out of the drawer, upgraded the firmware and bang, it worked: I could print!  Unfortunately, I need the prioritizing and handling capabilities of the 4500.  When is Dlink going to have the 4500 "catch up" to the older model??? The 4500's current beta firmware doesn't address the issue.  I have Shareport 1.1.0.R1 running on all the machines.
Thanks.

wait a couple of days... you will have to restart the dir-655 router in order to connect to your printer...

the dir-655 firmware 1.21 was amazing... but now the dir-655 is a piece of s*** because of the firmware 1.32NA... I can connect to the shareport for like 3 days, and then after that the 4th day i cannot connect.. it just goes back to available... after a week, the router resets by itself... im thinking of buying a new dir-655 and returning my old one for like an exchange... since i have my old dir-655 box.
