Hello,

I just set up my new 5500.  2.4Ghz works well in all areas of the house.  But as soon as I leave the 2nd floor bedrooms where the router is my 5.0Ghz drops down to almost nothing.  Works really good near the router, full bars, really fast.  Whats going on?  This is my first wireless N router.  B/G signals on 2.4Ghz, N/AC on 5.0GHz.

Placement of the router is crucial in the building. Central and on the main floor of the building. If there are multiple levels, place where signal is best to reach all floors. Extenders or repeaters may be needed if range and level of floors exceeds 2 or 3 levels. 5Ghz is best in line of sight with out any building materials in the way. 1 wooden ceiling/floor is ok and with in 15-20 feet should work on 5Ghz for best results.  Nature of the beast with 5Ghz. 2.4Ghz has better range and penetration through building materials.

2.4Ghz support N mode...If all of your devices support N mode, use single N, WPA2/AES only HT20/40 Disabled. If you need G mode, run Mixed G and N, WPA/WPA2 Mixed TPIK/AES and HT20/40 Enabled.

5.0 in itself is quite horrid.  Unless all devices are 5.0 AC.  This will allow beam forming, and a supposed boost of strength to 2.4 range.  However, just about zero devices are AC enabled, unless you want to spend money on a dongle and it can accept it.

My experience is that 5.0 is half to on third the range of 2.4.  And in most cases, the signal strength of 2.4 is so strong that it will be faster than 5.0.

Please do note that microwaves, weather stations, odd stuff like that round the house can screw with 2.4.

I haven't spent a lot of time on this but I have noticed better signal on both 2.4 and 5 ghz wireless signal with the new FW 1.11 throughout my house. I even put the router on one side of the house to see how far I could get good signal with the 5 ghz to the other side of the house with the iPad. I will say my house is a one story open concept so there isn't more than like 4 or 5 walls to go through at the far these point.

Thanks for feedback and sharing. I have the same similar layout at my house. I can put the router at one end and test signal performances on the other extreme end. Normal operation I try to keep the router in the middle for best coverage.
