General consensus and a couple other questions
« on: October 31, 2013, 12:30:57 PM »

I am currently running a DGL-4500 with a DIR-601 patched in to meet my wired/wireless needs. Overall it runs pretty well. Furry and myself ironed out all the kinks months ago and I have basically been running problem free ever since.

That being said. I have a great interest in the DGL-5500 it would be awesome to go back to a single router that would meet all my needs.

I know there were some initial speed bumps people were hitting but with several firmware revisions what is the consensus now?

Also I was wondering if the number of DHCP reservations and Mac Filter allowances has been increased in this new router.

I am at my limit on my current set up and with the new consoles coming I will be running into trouble if there is no way to add more.

Please review the postings about FW build updates, Beta FW and Feature Requests and Bugs for information. I'll try to update the Features and Bug list soon. Been busy.  :-\

You mean search those threads where people complain and get good advice given to them and either complain some more or never let anyone know how it is working for them after the advice?

Yeah I will go read those. :)

That was a joke furry.

I do find it quite odd though that very few people here report back. These routers are quite complex and if I can help someone avoid my same pitfalls I would in a minute.

I have taken some time and looked around and I don't see any mention of how many reserved ip's can be added to this router. I am going to need more than what my current set up has with the DGL4500 or figure out another way to accomplish what my current set up is doing.

I know, why I responded like that. hehe.

Ya, there seems to be more complaints or people complaining and won't let anyone help them, than anything else. Not much feed back on weather any of suggestions, help or new FW helps with any of the complaints. I do thank those who do give feedback and keep us posted on issues.

I'm not happy with the wireless performance. I am using the latest firmware and the 5500 does not perform as well as the 4300 I used to have. I wish the 4300 had not stopped working.

Most of my devices are still 2.4 GHz and had no trouble streaming HD quality video with the 4300. Now, they can sometimes not stream at all. The location of the router is in the same location I used to have the 4300.

The 4300 was like electricity. I didn't have to think about it for years, it just worked. The 5500 has not reached that level for me. Maybe the wireless G devices are just all dated. Unfortunately, I cannot upgrade them all.

I just had to turn off the Streamboost (which is the whole sales pitch for this router) to allow my PS3 to stream video over the wireless even though it was the highest priority device that was connected to the network.

Curious, since the 4300 was a wireless G mode only router, did you setup the 5500 for G mode only and test?
Did you set a manual speed values for SB? If so, what values did you use?
What is your ISP speed up and down?
What model ISP modem do you have?
What is the distances between the router and devices?

I haven't tried G only. I'll give that a go. I have some devices that support N (Xbox 360, iPad, laptop), so I thought I would use it since I finally have a router that supports it. The 5 GHz on the iPad has been mixed. It works well when I first connect, but then slows down/stops working. The 2.4 is more consistent. I haven't tested this with SB disabled, but then again, I really don't want to leave it disabled.

I read your posts and set a manual speed of 100/10. My cable is 30/5. Speed tests usually don't quite get to 30 down, but they are close. The up frequently is between 5 and 6.

I own my cable modem, it is the Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme

Distance to my Tivo is about 30 feet or so. Through some drywall, but pretty much a straight line. I could try the router at a different height, but it is in the same spot the 4300 occupied. Streaming Netflix on that does not yield full bars and HD quality, like it used to. 6/10 bars with some noticeable delays compared to the old router. Didn't even think too much about it before. The Tivo reports much better signal quality than it used to - 96% vs 80%, but the throughput is obviously not as good.

The PS3 is at an angle and down from the router. Not a ton between it, but also not completely unobstructed. Again, it used to stream in HD, no problem. It would not work today until I turned off SB and then was still lower quality.

I do have a 360 in another bedroom on the same floor as the router. It seems to do pretty well streaming over the wireless N, but the kids have noticed a little bit more caching than it used to.

There are some suggestions for upgrading wired LAN devices to N or even AC modes here:
Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Acess Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Acess Points (AP)

I used a DIR-865L in bridge mode for my roommates xbox downstairs...

I just ran a test yesterday with my 5500 streaming to my PC connected on AC mode and streamed well from the USB drive connected to the 5500. 30feet between.

I haven't had a chance to test 2.4Ghz yet.
