Hello,

I'm having issues with having two computers on the network at the same time.  I'm using a gateway nv59c with windows 7 and my spouse is using asus v5-571 with windows 7. Im able to use the gateway, two iphones and an appletv all at one time; the network can handle it fine but once the asus tries to connect, it has difficulties either connecting or it bogs down the network and everything stops working.  I have comcast's performance internet with the dlink dir-645 router.  I'm not sure how to fix it or what's happening.  Can someone recommend how to fix the problem??

• What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
• Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
• What region are you located?
• Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
• Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
• For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.

• Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
• Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
• Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
• Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
• Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
• Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
• If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
• Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
• Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
• Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
• WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
• Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.
• Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Wireless Configurations

• Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
• What wireless modes are you using?
• 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
• Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
• Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
• What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
• What wireless devices do you have connected?
• Any cordless house phones?
• Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
• If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
• Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
• Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."

I've the appropriate changes and i've had two different results. The first was the same response as always, it kicked my laptop off the network and the appletv lost connectivity.  The second response was a little different; the laptop and appletv remained on the network but the acer was having troubles with connecting to a website.  The web browser continues to say resolving host...

I'm still at a lose and dont know what to do at this point.

Seems like there is an IP configuration on the client devices that needs to be looked at.

One think you  can try, ensure all devices are set for automatic obtain DHCP IP address.
Turn off ALL devices accept for 1 wired LAN PC.
Factory reset the router.
Set up the routers WiFi.
Add the one reservation for the wired PC. Save settings and reboot the router.
While the router reboots, turn on the next device and then add the reservation to the router.

Do this process until get you get them all reserved. You shouldn't have any issues reserving, saving and connecting. After all have been reserved and the router rebooted one file time, test the internet on each. All should connected and get internet services.

Hey FurryNutz,

I reset the modem to its factory settings.  The asus does not have a wired WLAN connection; so I used the WPS button to connect the laptop to the router.  After that I connected the gateway via WPS button.  We were able to use the laptops at the same time for about four minutes until the same issues came up. We are back to square one now.  


Right now she's using the hot spot on our iphone to access the internet using her asus and i'm on the laptop using the wifi. So it leads me to believe its something to do with the asus and i have no idea what to do about it.

Are the drivers up to date for the Asus?

Possible you might update to v1.04 on the 645 and test again...if you do, please follow this:
FW Update Process

Don't reload any saved configuration files. just do one more factory reset after the file is sent then set up from scratch.

All drivers are up-to-date with the Asus and the firmware has been updated to v1.04. 

I had my ISP come and check the connection. They said it was fine and I had a strong connection.  He ran a ping connection test and once the Asus logged on; the network shut down and wasn't working.  I feel like the Asus is having conflicts with the IP address or the router can not assign one.  Also, I recently bought a Chromecast and I'm having problems connecting with the network as well. 

Is there anything you recommend I do (short of cutting my loses and buying a different router?)

So if the Asus is having problems, I presume there is a problem elsewhere you need to isolate and narrow down where this problem is, either on the WAN side or the LAN side. Start by turning off ALL devices accept for one wired PC. Disconnect all wired PCs.

If ISP claims there side is good, start with by passing any router and directly connect to the ISP Modem, make sure this isn't seen there, if thats good, then connect a router and factory reset. Swap cables between ISP modem and router as well to test. Try to set WAN port speed on the router from auto to manual 100Mb. Don't set any other settings on router accept for SSID and PW. You may even want to turn WiFi off and test...bring on the wired PCs and see how it goes. After that, turn on WiFi and see how it goes.
