Web interface not available but NAS still accessbile
« on: November 13, 2013, 02:43:28 AM »

Recently I got a DNS-323 from my mate who seldom uses it. It was pretty nice initially but off-late I am having issues with the web interface.

At time the web interface is completely inaccessible either over LAN or the internet, but it seems to work after a restart. However I was able to access the files on the NAS while the web interface was still inaccessible.

Any idea what might be wrong? I have got quite a few more issues but this is a deal breaker

Reset the unit to factory defaults, disable all servers (ftp. AV, etc.) and reconfigure - enable just the essentials and then monitor it.  The most common cause is one of the servers, but I forget which one.

Once properly configured it is rare that you need the interface anyway. Although as Fordem says, it you clean up the config it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks mate, will give it a try. I do need the upnp server, hope it is not the culprit

I schedule torrent downloads almost on a daily basics, so the web interface is kinda important to me  ;)

Add the servers you need back one by one, starting with the one you need most - the condition may or may not reoccur, if it does, it's either the last one you enabled or a combination.

Look into FFP (Google: FFP DNS323). The Torrent and Media players are significantly more stable and provide better interfaces. I download torrents daily and run for 200+ days without a reboot and even then it is usually for some other reason than stability.

That was my next thing on the list once I get the web interface thing sorted out. I am planning on getting transmission running, so expect more queries from me on ffp soon  :)

Looks like it was the DHCP server that was the culprit. Haven't had any issue for the last 8 days. Thanks mate.

It's a little unusual that you would have the DHCP server enabled on a NAS that has internet access - most people use their router as the DHCP server.

Well I enabled it when I connected it directly to my laptop to test the Gigbit transfer speed and never bothered to turn it off, now that we are on the matter, I got a meh transfer speed (1 min 15 sec to transfer a 1.75 GB file from NAS to Laptop). I will open a new thread for this soon  ;)

In all seriousness, I wouldn't bother since that equates almost pound for pound to the published capability of the device. For more information you could trawl through these old posts:

Sudden Drop in Transfer Speed - Was > 100Mb/sec.... Now about 8Mb/sec

Slow disk to disk copy

or indeed search the forum for 'slow' or 'speed' and find dozens more to amuse yourself with.

Is the accessing,The web interface is different from not being able to access ftp over chrome, firefox, IE?  I used to be able to access the ftp over google chrome but now am not able.

You need to tell us what the problem you're experiencing is - the NAS' web interface does not allow ftp access, it allows you to access ftp server settings.

If you're having a problem with ftp access using google chrome, you need to provide us with the details, is this ftp access from within the LAN?  from the internet?  You can also try another browser of an ftp client.
