Connection stops working when downloading torrents
« on: November 15, 2013, 02:03:20 PM »

Every time I download torrents the internet stops working on all devices connected to the router (wired and wireless) ex. Browsing the internet, watching netflix. The torrents download just fine but nothing else will work. Here are the things i have tried

- Limiting connections on torrent app from 1 to 500
- disabling and limiting upload on torrent app
- throttling both unload and download from 1 to max
- tried 4 different torrent apps
- tried on another computer over wireless
- disabled QOS on router
- disabled firewall SPI on router
- changed both UDP and TCP Endpoint Filtering to Endpoint Independent
- port forwarded correct ports for torrent program
- DMZ
- factory reset of modem
- upgrading modem to latest 2.11NA firmware

None of the things listed above solved anything, any suggestions?

Would also like to add i know the problem is with the router and not my ISP, i have been through 3 routers on my current ISP and this is the first one that caused this problem

I do not have / use uTorrent so i do not have the options you have outlined in that link, i currently and have always used tixati

as far as bandwidth goes i still get these problems even if im downloading at 100 KB/s and uploading at 10 KB/s

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
Some of the Torrent FAQ information may pertain to your SW clients.

ISP is cable, metrocast of CT

dont use ISP modem, i have my own, Motorola surfboard SB5100

ISP claims 15 Mbps download, 1 Mbps upload, but i actually get 16 down, 1.5 up (just tested)

yes i tried all methods mentioned above before and after firmware updates, update was also done immediately following a factory reset as well

You'll need to adjust your torrents as this seems to be the only cause of your problems.

I recommend that you use IE or FF. Download the v2.11 FW file and unpack it.
Turn off ALL devices accept for 1 wired LAN PC.
Do 1 factory reset from the routers web page.
Skip the set up wizard and go directly to the FW update section. Load the .bin file and let it process and come back to ready.
Do 1 more factory reset from the routers web page.
Set up the router from scratch. Test with the 1 wired PC for downloads and such.
Turn on 1 more device and check internet.
Do another download on the wired PC and see if the 2nd device is still connected.

  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
  • Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

have already done all above recommendations, except move the router, still did not fix anything. I am 99% sure it is a faulty router, I hooked up an old netgear router i had sitting in my basement and now all my problems are gone when downloading torrents.

Maybe you can do this with the 655 and connect it to the NG router:
Turning a router into an AP.
