Plz help me ban TVU player
« on: May 24, 2009, 10:09:11 AM »

Hi,

I've been sharing my Internet connection with around 7 ppl (due to budget). 1 or 2 of them always want to watch streaming from TVU player. Prob is if someone starts watching, the whole network upload will drop like mad and I will lag or even disconnect from my Garena dota games.

I'd rly like to block TVU using any filter options so if it's possible, please help me guys. I dun know how to check TVU player's port correctly. I've been trying out lots of stuff but still the player will successfully annoy me until now.

Your help is sincerely appreciated.  ;D

Simple search with google: http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=tvu+player+ports&meta=

This is the result: At start TVU Player uses UDP 3950, 3951 and 3952 then at least one of TCP 3950, 3951 or 3952. The TV channels list is obtained from a connection on port TCP 8080. All those connections are made to the server previously mentioned by others. When you choose a TV channel it uses UDP 3940 and then a TCP connection to 3940. Then you just get a rain of connections to other servers using UDP/TCP combinations.

You can use QoS or Wish to prioritize these ports (QoS: give them a high number like 200 or 255). Unfortunately these apps cannot be blocked completely. I don't know the player, but if it randomizes ports you're screwed....

Thanks for the reply EddieZ. I also see the Port 8080 thingie appearing every now and then in the logs. Turning on QoS helps my gaming 'a tiny' bit but even with the QoS turned on, the delays and lags in games are still there if the darn program starts it's connections.

Just wanna check with u sth. My upload speed is around 700kbps so suppose I have higher upload speeds, will I get better results or will that stupid program will benefit more and torture me more by using the increased upload speed? Download for me is 10Mbps though.

Higher uploads will  benefit TUV also.
I guess you might want to talk with the sharing partners how to divide the bandwidth in an honest way.
But to be honest, this is probably the worst scenario possible for online gaming: wireless (which adds lag almost by definition) and sharing with others with high bandwidth needs.
