WAN-LAN gigabit speed problem
« on: November 23, 2013, 11:33:02 AM »

Hello,

I have a problem with one of D-link products(router dir-860L) and it seems nobody cares though I made a ticket to dlink support and i also posted on the facebook page of dlink from my country(Romania).
The problem with this product is that it can't handle gigabit speeds WAN-LAN, i have a gigabit connection from my ISP but when i'm using this router the speed(wired) reaches a peak of 480 Mbps(download) and stops, but if i plug the ISP cable into my PC the download speed reaches at least 700 Mbps!I tried various firmwares (1.02,1.03,1.04) but the result remains the same.I'm disappointed because i paid quite a lot of money on acquireing it (130 Euro) and i get poor results(even compared with less costly counterparts) and no support.
I hope somebody in here can help me.
Thank you

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

What Hardware version is your router? A1
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? 1.04
What region are you located? Romania, Europe
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router? Wired
Has a Factory Reset been performed? Yes

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Optic Fiber - Ethernet cable(CAT5e)
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?None
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? 1 Gb Down and Up
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values - I have MTU 1500, my isp doesn't have a specific MTU requirement, the connection is done based on the MAC address of my network card and the IP comes via DHCP
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. - Already Disabled
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual - I don't have it or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual. - Done
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench - Done
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting. -Done
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. -Done
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6. -Done
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test - it seems that with firmware 1.04 i don't have this menu anymore(it was present with fw 1.02) in the firewall settings(but i already tried it yesterday and there was no difference) and no change for SPI Test also.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used. -Done
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced. - I don't have WISH menu and WPS was turned off.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? - It is set to Auto but i tested it also with 1000 and i get the same result. Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time. -Done
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.- Changed with other cable, i tested 3 cables.

After i did all that you told me above it keeps the same speed 460 -480 Mbps Dl, though the upload is higher and it was higher also before i did any change to the settings, the max upload i got was ~700 Mbps and directly connected to the PC ~780 Mbps

I recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and ask them about this router and it's ability to work on a Gb WAN network. I presume the connection speed is Gb and not 100Mb. These routers support the ISP modem or connection speed, however actual data xfer speeds differ from ISP supported throughput in which you are seeking. Since your PC is able to get these speeds, I presume there could be an issue with the configuration or HW on this router.

Let us know how it goes.

Yes if Romania does not have a support phone number, call D-Link EU or next closest support office to you.
