DWA-160

Is there a way to change the firmware on the DWA-160?

I have two Rev A1 DWA-160.  One I bought on Ebay and another from a local store.  The one I got from ebay has firmware version 1.21 and the one from the local store FW 1.1

The unit with the FW 1.21 can't connect to my dir-825 on 5ghz when the channel on the router is set to auto.  The SSID for the 2.4 and 5 ghz are different names.

I tried the driver that came with the unit and the one that came with the FW1.1 unit and driver version 1.4 downloaded from D-Link website.

I also tried a couple of clean XP install to remove any previous driver issues and tried upgrading the firmware on the DIR-825.

The unit with the FW1.1 doesn't seem picky about what driver I use.

Contacting techsupport on the phone only got a guy reading a script telling me to reload the driver and try upgrading the driver to 1.4.   Contacting techsupport via email only got a response about contacting techsupport on the phone.

Maybe you get return one to the local store and get the B1 rev so you can get the drivers from Ralink.  I've gone there and updated the driver a couple times with new releases.

The only problem I'm having with the Ralink utility which I was using instead of the D-Link utility is that it kept looking to connect to the first open network it sees instead of remembering to connect to my own secure network.  That's why I use the Windows Zero configuration utility.

I did some additional testing and it looks like the only channel that seems to work on the 5Ghz band with Rev A1 FW1.21 is channels 149,153,157 and 161.  Also the connection is weak on the channels that do work.  The FW 1.1 works on all channel and gets about a third more signal strength.

I don't have the box to FW1.21 and since it was bought on Ebay its kind of hard to return.  I was kind of hoping D-link would honor their warranty.  The product is suppose to have a 1 year warranty.
