Sharing certain stuff with just me..
« on: November 28, 2013, 07:19:56 PM »

I asked this elsewhere, but didn't get a satisfactory answer. I'm not totally sure my answer belongs here.

I have the DIR-825. I have Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit. I have an Android cell phone.

I want to share files with ONLY myself and my cell phone. But when my relatives come over I'd like them to be able to use my internet on their phones, just not see my files.

How to do it?

Oh I don't need to look. HW version B1 and running firmware 2.07NA.

I just found the guest zone you speak of. I'll test it out myself first, thanks.

I cannot get it to work. I set up a guest zone. I set up a schedule from 5PM-7PM tonight just to test.

When I try to get on through my phone it says "not in range", but if I connect to regular network it works fine.

What wireless mode and security mode do you have set on the GZ? Try disabling security for GZ temporarily as a test and try again?

No luck. I don't get it. On my phone I go to Add Network, I type my normal network name and enter WPA2 and password.. phone will find/connect immediately.

When I search for what I named the guest zone.. it automatically says "not in range" and doesn't even try to connect. It's like it doesn't exist.

I'm thought maybe I'd update to firmware 2.09NA, is that for my router HW B1? The thread says B and then points me to a Dlink Canada website.

Lets rename the GZ ssid name to something different. try 825gz and see how that does...leave off the security for now and just see if you can get anything connected.

I am in United States.

Renaming it to 825gz did not work. It's on 2.4Ghz. My regular network is 2.4Ghz also. I have 5Ghz turned off.

Here's what I notice.. I tried to connect to 825gz, no luck. So then I thought I have to leave for the day.. I'll set my phone back to my normal network for now. It wouldn't connect unless I removed 825gz from the list. Then it connects instantly.

And did you disable the security on the GZ? Just leave it open and test...devices should connect to the 825gz name...
Is the 825gz name being seen by your devices?
Do any other devices connect besides your phone?

Yes, you can use the v2.09 version located at the Canada site here:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=54494.0

If you choose to update, please follow this:
FW Update Process
I recommend updating if you can't get connected to the gz with out any security turned on.

I got it to work just now. It was on accident, but it won't stay connected. It gets disconnected about 10 seconds after.

Here's how I got it to connect:

Removed 825gz from my phone.. there's a button to forget it. Went back into router and saved guest zone settings. It said I didn't change anything are you sure you want to save. I waited the 15 seconds and then my phone automatically saw the guest zone, 825gz. I connected to it.. it obtained an IP address.

I was connected for maybe 10 seconds and wanted to run a speed test. Before I could even do that it was disconnected and it's back to "not in range". I'm 2 feet away from the router.

I have to run.. my dog is getting a haircut.. be back in a few hours.

Ok so it did connect but then disconnected.

What mode is the 825 using? Try WPA and TPIK only and 20Mhz on the main WiFi when you get back.

I upgraded to 2.09NA successfully. My main wireless already had 20Mhz. Security WPA-Personal. I changed it to WPA and TKIP like you said. No luck. I'm trying guest zone with no password. Doesn't work.

On my main network I have it set to invisible, so it shouldn't show up if neighbors scan. So, I manually enter it in my phone and my password. Connects right away and works great.

I don't know what happened, but scanning in my phone it finds a connection marked "yuppicide". Weird. I never set anything up with that name. I connected, but could not browse the internet. So, I turned off guest for now, because I got worried. yuppicide is no longer seen.

Wireless is weird. Now, I live on a dead end street in the middle of the woods. I used to see the lady across the street's wireless. I know it's hers because it had her name on it. Now she doesn't show up.. maybe she renamed it.. whatever.. but what's weird is one called c3xt5 or something just showed up and is gone now.. someone named madu showed up earlier today and is gone.

There is one that is marked xfinitywifi with excellent strength, but it won't let me connect. Good thing. I bet it's me. I have Comcast and recently got a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, which came with wireless in it. Comcast does not allow you to go into settings, so I called Comcast and they shut off the wireless for me. I told them I already have a d-link and I was worried I didn't want neighbors mooching off me.

Does any other device besides the phone connect to the GZ on the 825?
Might seem like that your phone isn't working right even with security OFF on GZ. If others can connect.

What is the Mfr and model of the ISP modem?
