Attached Computers Not Listed
« on: October 17, 2007, 07:48:26 PM »

I've got a few problems going on but I'll start with a simple one. I had 1 DIR-655 that just wouldn't work on my network so I returned it and purchased another unit. I initially installed the router slowly bringing everything up and things were going well. I don't know if the trouble started when I turned on the one computer which connects with a DWA-552 NIC but all afternoon the attached device list only shows the wireless computer and that computer isn't even connecting reliably!

The computer that I use to log into the router is connected by wire and that computer isn't listed but obviously it got an IP address and is working. I also have a NAS and 2 printers connected by wire and those work but are not listed. They were listed when I first connected them but I haven't seen them on the list all afternoon.

My network looks like this:

[cable modem]----[DIR-655]
                          |  |  |  |
                          |  |  |  |
                          |  |  |  +-----[1Gbit Switch]----[computer #1]
                          |  |  |             |
                          |  |  |             |+-----------------[NAS]
                          |  |  |
                          |  |  |+-------[1Gbit Switch]----[Printer #1]
                          |  |                |
                          |  |                |+-----------------[Printer #2]
                          |  |                |
                          |  |                |+-----------------[802.11g Router, different IP range]
                          |  |
                          |  |+----------[computer #2]
                          |
                          |+-------------[HD-DVD Player]

Hope someone has some ideas on this!

Try to force the connection speed (speed and duplex) on all your Network devices to 10MB Half Duplex to diagnose. And post the outcome please. Just ensure no software firewalls!

Are the computers that aren't listed connecting to the internet (or each other) just fine?

I haven't had a chance to force 10MB Half Duplex. Computer #2 is turned off at this point but computer #1 is fully functional as well as can access the 2 printers.

Here's what the list of devices looks like right now:

IP Address      Name (if any)   MAC
192.168.0.100   IOAKSTORAGE
192.168.0.102   silverstone
192.168.0.119   pentiumd
192.168.0.197   Nexperia
192.168.0.198   PhotoSma
192.168.0.199                           00:80:xxxxxxxx

First I removed the MAC addresses except for the last entry because I wanted to show that the last entry did not have a name even though it did yesterday (this is printer #2 and the name should be BRN_7BE833) THe Brother printer has a configuration tool and I just confirmed that it can communicate with the printer.

The other odd thing about this list is that "PhotoSma" is suppose to be "PhotoSmart" which is my "printer #1" in my diagram. I can print to this printer and I can access it by entering the IP address but I cannot access it by entering http://photosmart/ but I could prior to using this router.

"Nexperia" is another computer that is trying to connect by a wireless connection (using a D-Link DWA-552 card) and that is just a mess so I won't talk about that machine.

Computer #2 is "silverstone" and is a Media Center PC that turned on last night to record a show but I don't even want to access that computer for fear I'll loose what sanity I have left!

This is just strange...

The topology that you provided is helpful, however you failed to list the OS's being used. You reverence a Media Center PC which implies XP. Please describe all OS's and software firewalls being used on the network so I can properly assist you in trouble shooting this issue.

Sorry, all OS's are either WinXP Pro or Home except for the mentioned Media Center PC. As a test I connected a Buffalo Nfiniti and the network is functioning with 100% access on all devices which should prove that there isn't an issue with any cables, switches, or computer NICs.
