Weird behavior from Atheros QCA9565 when linked with 826L
« on: November 30, 2013, 07:43:33 AM »

Hello All,

After days of searching and testing, I finally decided to ask on this forum.

I bought a DIR-826L and everything is great, it does everything I wanted with good performance. Here is my setup

Wan router - DIR-825
Powerlined to 3rd floor
DIR 826L connected via powerline as an AP

Here is my problem.

When ever I transfer or download large files on my laptop using  Atheros QCA9565 card, I get these sudden signal decreases to about 1/4 of my original signal. I checked the following.

Driver - updated
Other devices - perfect signal/connection
connected my laptop to my DIR 825 via wifi - no problem

The network card seems to misbehave when connected to the 826L, it would lose its ability to function, I have inssider and it shows a drop in signal in all networks. It does not happen when I am connected to the DIR 825, I wonder what could cause this.

Suspicion 1 - network card/driver problem
suspicion 2 - router is sending some kind of signal to cause network card to malfunction (hmmm...)

Anyone has any experience with this situation?

Thanks a bunch

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

Are you using the WAN or LAN port the 826L when connected to the host router?

Will try a few things you have suggested

except wireless settings, everything else in advanced in set to default.

I am using 2.4Ghz G, N mode auto 20/40 mhz, tried forcing only 20 mhz no change

I also have 5Ghz mode broadcasting auto 20/40 mhz

I tried chaning channels, no change

Im running the latest firmware from d-link support, im using a lan port, the wan port is left empty

Couldn't figure it out, the unit maybe itself defective, so I returned the Dir 826L and bought a DIR 820L AC1000 for less.

Now the problem is solved.

Oh and to add, it is not only the atheros adapter that does that, it does it on my Win7 pc running a D link adapter too. Whenever I transfer at speeds of 10mbps and more, the signal on those machines just wobble like crazy.

Glad the DIR-820L fixed it.

I might presume there could be issues on the client side that maybe effecting transfers...
