Does anybody have any ideas why wake on lan over internet doesn't work with my DGL-5500 and my Rampage IV extreme mobo custom setup. I have configured everything properly as far as I can tell. I can wake the computer with a magic packet (from off) over LAN IP, and also over internet, but only for about five minutes after the computer has been powered down. From what I've read, I'm guessing the router drops it from it's cache after 5 minutes. I have my computer assigned an ip in the router setup pages, but this did not solve the problem.

Is it possibly the arp cache that is reset on the router? As a note, wake on LAN over internal network IP (ie. the 192..., works no matter how long the computer has been off), but wake on wan does not work after about 5 minutes or so of being powered off. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
• If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

The hardware version of my DGL-5500 is A1. I am currently running the 1.11B3 firmware, and I'm located in San Diego, CA. I have Time Warner Cable @ 50Mbps down / 5Mbps (Upload) connection. My modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB6141, and it is simply a cable modem (no router).

The weird thing is that wake on lan over internet works for a short time after my computer has been powered off, but after about 5 minutes, the magic packet does nothing to the desktop coming over the internet. What makes me believe it is somehow a router issue is that it works correctly from a wi-fi device on same wi-fi going strictly wake-on-lan (no internet). I am not familiar with the inner workings of this router, but from what I've read elsewhere, it may be an issue with cache on the router being cleared.

My question is whether or not the MAC address of my NIC in my desktop can be bound statically to a specific ip address in the router cache in such a way that it does not disappear after about 5 minutes? Just a theory - but I would like to get this working before I go out of town in a few weeks.

I have been trying a little bit more and here's what I've found out. The magic packet does make it to my computer coming from over the internet if I set the Wake-on-LAN virtual server to my dektop's ip address. For some reason it doesn't work when it is setup for 192.168.0.255 , but I have witnessed the magic packet arrive safe and sound via wireshark. This leads me back to my initial theory that the router is purging my desktop form the arp cache after it has been off for a little while, and as a result the magic packet does not make it to the desktop when coming through the internet. Wake on LAN from internal LAN still works fine no matter how long the computer has been off, but no wake on WAN. I'm guessing that reserving the IP in the DHCP reservation table does not have the effect of statically binding the ip with the MAC address of my NIC to the arp table.

Perhaps the D-Link engineers can look at the issue. Maybe a later firmware fix?

This is something that may not be supoorted on this model router. I recommend that you phone contact DLink support and see if there is any information on this...this is a new router for the market and meant and designed for the gaming community...some features may or maynot be included in this router as seen in others. If ask and see what DLink supports as far as what model routers support WOL.

I tried that earlier this year sir, If I didn't get one, nobody else gets one. 

Well I hope that at least you and jlobue10 and maybe work together on this to see if you guys can get WoL going on this. WoL just isn't used much I gather and seems to be a corner use case for those of you that use it. Might be why D-Link doesn't actively develop routers for use with it. I don't know. Hope maybe you two and see though and if it does, will definitely need a sticky for it.

It's okay though, this router will be going to my dad as a Homer Simpson style gift (ie. one that I benefit from when I'm in town). I decided to go with a new one. I tried the ASUS RT-AC68U and it was very WOL friendly. It's even got a tab explicitly for WOL. I'm sure somebody could get it to work on that router or the R7000 (Netgear Nighthawk). The ASUS one I picked up from my local Fry's was open box and 5GHz wasn't working right, so I returned it for the Netgear Nighthawk. I have been using D-Link for years and it pains me to switch, but the Nighthawk has performed well -- no buyer's remorse. Shield streaming in console mode is awesome, by the way.

Yes, let me know if you want to continue trying.  This could benefit others if we can get it working.
