Unable to Access Switch Ports
« on: December 16, 2013, 07:42:35 AM »

Just got my 868L this weekend.  Went through all the setup wizards and everything was good.  Went out for a few hours and came back to a unusable network.  All devices accessing my network through the switch ports inaccessable including the WAN.  Power cycled the router and everything was back to normal again.  After an hour or so, same thing happens.  From a wireless perspective the router loses access to the internet (cable modem) and all devices attached to the switch, but local wireless devices are available.  I can still log into the router web management.  Reboot the router and all is well again for a little while.  I tried many things.  Back leveled to 1.02 from 1.04.  Changed settings for 2.4Ghz band.  The last thing I did was turned off the 5Ghz band and no more problems (for at least 24 hours and running).  Unfortunately, the reason I bought the router was for the 5Ghz capability.

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.

Update:

I think I have things working.  I need to do more testing to determine which change resolved my problem.  I back leveled to 1.01 beta (based on another post about rebooting the router frequently) and changed the 5 GHz broadcast to AC only.  Unfortunately, I could not find the 1.01 firmware on the dlink ftp site.  I was able to get it from Softpedia (I think).  I'm going to try AC and N setting next, but I have both 2.4 and 5 GHz bands active which is where I wanted to be.  My Dell XPS 15 (2011) supports 5 GHz N, using the Centrino 1000 chipset.  If AC and N continue to work, I will move back to 1.02 and then 1.04 if things remain stable.  I'll post my results as I progress.

Keep us posted. Give the suggestions a try and please answer some of the questions so we can get a better idea of what your system and situation is so we can give you better help, feedback and suggestions. FYI, FW files are only supported from official D-Link sites and FTP. Softpedia is not supported. Be aware that non-official sites may modify files. Good Luck.

I would be happy to use official firmware, but 1.01 is not available on the ftp site.  If you give me a link to it I will be happy to load it on the router.  As I stated, I intend to try to get to 1.04 if my 5 GHz setting work on other official firmware versions.  My answers are in red below.  Any suggestions you have would be welcome.  Side Note:  I have been a DLink customer for about 10 years.  I'm upgrading from an DIR-655 which served me well for the last 3 years.

Is this Sonos broadcasting 2.4Ghz? If so, you'll need to move the 868L or the Sonos away from each other.

I think your issues are localized to your configurations and environment. I have this same router and have not experienced any issues with it. Using any version of FW. I'm at v1.04 right now. If you decide to upgrade FW versions or any version, please always follow this: FW Update Process

No.  I run a Small Business Server which must supply DHCP and DNS services.

Yes.  Panasonic Dect 6

Is this phone 2.4 or 5Ghz?

I believe Dect 6 runs at 1.9 GHz.  I could be wrong.  Have to hunt down the manual on-line.

Is this Sonos broadcasting 2.4Ghz? If so, you'll need to move the 868L or the Sonos away from each other.

My Sonos unit is 2.4 GHz.  It is at least 6-12 inches from the router inside a cabinet.  Is that going to be a problem?

I agree.  Its hard to get underneath the problem.  Clearly running the 5 GHz band is part of the problem.  Hence router ran fine without it turned on.  The question is what's causing the problem.  As I make progress in my testing, I should be able to narrow it down.  Just a little time consuming.

Ok so your using the 868L in AP mode? If so, please review this:
Turning a router into an AP.

Please move the Sonos or the router so that there is at least some distance between them. I presume if the Sonos also broadcasts a signal on the same freq, there can be interference problems.

No.  I'm using it a the main router for my network.  I need UDP, NAT, etc.  It's just not providing DHCP services, my Windows 2011 Small Business server is along with primary DNS services.  I do have the router set up to forward DNS to Comcast if necessary.  I will turn off the Sonos to test if it is causing the issue.  However, I'm not having any problems with 2.4 GHz service.  Only 5 Ghz (see original post).  Is there a debug mode I can put the router in to get information put into the log file that might help me diagnose this problem?

Ok, I would disable 2.4Ghz and just test only the 5Ghz radio.

Try setting a single mode N, manual chl 36, WPA2/AES only, Auto 20/40Mhz and report your findings. Also let us know if you disable security on the 5ghz radio temporarily, what happens?

There is DEBUG Logs option that you can turn on, I think under Status/Logs. Turn this on first.

Upgraded my firmware back to 1.02 and things are stable.  The configuration change I made to maintain stability is setting the 5 GHz band to broadcast AC only or AC and N.  I'm sure there is something in my environment causing the problem.  These settings are sufficient for my situation.  I will upgrade to 1.04 this weekend with these settings and post back here.
