Connecting 1TB ext HD - router USB or via iMac
« on: January 08, 2014, 03:57:16 PM »

I have a Western Digital 'My Passport' 1TB external hard drive (Mac OS extended journaled) that I had planned to connect to my new DIR-868L router (firmware 1.06, Canada) so my Boxee Box or ChromeCast with Plex could access the video files.

- Would I receive better performance if the hard drive was connected via USB to the router or my iMac? iMac is connected via ethernet 5E cable to router.

- If via the router, how would I set it up? When I plugged it into the router, the router only saw 200mb and it was inaccessible on my iMac (OSX 10.9.1) when I followed the manuals instructions.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Max supported HDD sizes are usually 500Gb and formatted to NTFS. If you can test out a smaller drive with NTFS formatting to see if this works, then you'll know if size and formatting is required.

Using USB on the router can work however is always will be a performance hit as USB isn't as fast as wired LAN.  I know that the 868L supports both USB 3.0 or 2.0 connections. You'll need to see if your USB drive supports 3.0 which is faster and test it out.

An alternate solution would be to review a USB to LAN network adapter for the USB drive...

You can connect the USB drive to the Mac and share it out, only draw back is that you have to leave the Mac running for access.

Thank you for the reply

The USB functionality was one of the key features I wanted to use but it sounds like that is not an option with my current setup.

If I decide to use a NTFS hard drive under 500gb via the router USB, how would I set it up on my iMac?
