Why is shareport so slow?
« on: May 30, 2009, 05:14:26 PM »

I have a external usb2 HD and the fastest speeds I can attain are 2-3 MB with shareport. When I connect the HD directly to the computer I see speeds of 30+ MB. I'm guessing here, but it seems the dir-655 (latest firm and software) only has a usb1 port. This makes shareport useless for NAS and I bought the HD just for this. Anyone have some input for me?

I get tops 4 MB/s, and it's a USB 2.0 port. That's about the best you will get. The USB HDD feature is just a nice ad on, it was initially not even intended to be a feature on the DIR. Comparing this connection to direct USB connections is not a realistic comparison, not even for dedicated NAS devices. Only a $400+ device (Synology) wil give you 20 MB/s speed. And it does not have to do all the other things a router does.

The limitiation has to do with processing power and memory. Don't forget that the main feature of the router is not to suffer from this USB gadget. Translating USB-2-Ethernet and vv requires quite some processing power. So if you want NAS performance, only a dedicated NAS device with dedicated hardware will give that.

The usb port puts decent power that even helps for my 4 port usb hub on my DIR-855.

I see the exact same speed when I connect my flash drives, to my mother board and to the router's usb port. Goes up to 30MBs, but it also depends on the flash drive brand.

Nonetheless, I have a decent motherboard with integrated Gig ports and while the router is also a Giger, I get exceptional speeds.

Also, I don't like how the letters 'HD' are use on everything now; when it doesn't belong  ;D

Recap: Are you claiming 30 MB/s (megabyte per sec) over ethernet and your DIR655 USB connection? Or is it 30 megabit per second you're claiming?

If so I'd like to see this setup tested.

30 megabit = 3.74 megabyte  ;)
