How to give text name to the MAC or lan numbers ?
« on: January 30, 2014, 03:20:46 PM »

I 'assume I am in the correct forum, if not I appologize".   I have need of very little help by just reading the support in my Dir-655 but now I am frustrated.   I did this once before, and for the life of me I cannot find where I did it.  I hesitate to go into the setup for fear of a reset but maybe that's where it is.

I once named my LAN equipment by MAC number so that when I look at the status, I see names besides numbers and I know what's what.  Now, I've added pieces of equipment over time and those have no names.  For example, I just connected a piece of beta equipment and had problems, yet looking into the router settings I sat here counting how many things should be in there so I could tell if it did not get a router address.  It did and that was not the problem.

But please tell me where I was when I did that long ago.   I thank you in advance.    Donna

You can look under Status/Device info to see what connected.

However I recommend that you should Reserver IP addresses all devices under Setup/Networking. From here you can assign IP addresses and give NAMES to the devices for ease of identification.

Thanks,  I do understand what you are saying.  I don't have any ip addresses reserved but under Status I see most of my Ip addresses say things like kindle - HP Print - Donna Desktop etc, etc.  and they all have the IP addy next to that column.

So, how the heck did the names get in the status area?  I haven't added equipment in awhile but I was so sure that I had done those at one time.

Thos names are the network names defined on each equipment. Some of them you can change (windows PC's, ... ) , others you can't (android phones, printers, ... )

Point is correct, Windows PCs and Mac PCs and some other devices that support the HOSTNAME feature, users can input any value into the HOSTNAME area and then the router will display this on the routers status pages if the router can correctly gain access and read this information. Some phones and other devices do have a HOSTNAME or device name that maybe already set. Some devices may not support the host name feature. You'll need to contact your devices Mfr for support and information on this.

How very interesting, and I thank both of you for the info.  You can bet I'll be reading more about Hostnames.  Believe me, you are never too old to learn and I hope I never feel differently.  Currently, I'm doing some beta testing and it all connects to my router.  I'm going to go into my beta forum and bring this up for conversation.
