Newbie needing some advice and guidance
« on: February 05, 2014, 04:53:08 AM »

I am new to the world of NAS so I'm hoping ohers can fill in some blanks for me.

I installed 2x 3GB drives into the 320L and set it up as a RAID1 unit. I then copied over a bunch of media and work files to the drive which took the best part of a day and a half to complete. I then upgaded to the latest available firmware.

Now that I have copies of media and music on the NAS I want to know how I do the following

1. Set up an automatic incremental backup of the folders on my PC's attached external USB drive to equivalent folders on the 320L - what software should I use for this? (I'm using Windows 7 in this instance).

I've searched through the 320L manual and nowhere does it explain how to do this.

My only other experience of using a NAS was a friend who has a Synology which comes with a client app that sits on the PC and makes the job of backing up easy and automatic. Is there an equivalent solution for the 320L?

Thanks for any advice an tips....

OK

So I had a little look through the documentation and it's pretty useless in terms of being user friendly. So, for the benefit of others who get stuck at this hurdle here's what I discovered by trial and error.

It turns out that once the DNS is set up on your network it appears within my own PC's directory tree as a DLink DVD RW drive. From here I discovered a folder called DOC with various PDFs one of which refers to client software called the ShareCenter Sync Manual.

I installed the exe file for the ShareCenter Sync software from this DVD drive onto the PC (Windows 7) and set about creating a backup task.

All very straightforward... when you know where to look.

Frankly I think the software on both the NAS via a web browser and for the client PC are pretty poor by comparison with the efforts from Synology... but I'm prepared to persevere!

A quick aside, the browser interface does not seem to play nice with Firefox.
