Setup with Charter Internet
« on: February 07, 2014, 08:39:41 AM »

Hi all,

I received a DIR-605L last year from my father-in-law (because he loves his and knew I needed a new router). I have Charter's cable internet in my house, and I have a two-fold issue. Hopefully someone here can help me.
1. To set up my router, I choose DHCP (because that's what the connection is) and go through the setup. After it completes, I have to go back into setup and clone my laptop's MAC address to make it work.
2. Because of this, my laptop sees my SSID with a "2" next to it, and I think this is causing my laptop to not be able to connect to my Chromecast (which works just fine with my iPhone and iPad mini). BTW: I know VPN connections can cause issues, and I have zero VPN connections on my laptop.

Is there some other step/procedure/process/anything that I can try to make this setup work AND allow my laptop to access my Chromecast? I've been banging my head against a virtual brick wall for a week, and I don't know what else to try.

I appreciate any help.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. For the DGL-5500, review this for Streamboost information and settings: Furry's DGL-5500 Review
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Hardware: A1
Firmware: 1.14
Region: USA (Louisiana)
ISP: Charter
Type: Cable
Modem: Motorola SURFboard SB6120
Speeds: 30mpbs down, ~3.5mbps up

I tried all your other suggestions. Still no dice. Any other ideas? Is the cloned MAC causing my PC to see the network as [SSID]2, and thus giving it fits with the Chromecast?

Remove the MAC Clone as it should not be needed with the ISP modem and this router...

Be sure that the router is the main wireless AP for all of your devices. You should not have to share out any connections on the Laptop or other devices.

You might do a factory rest on the router while you unplug the ISP modem for 10 seconds then plug back in. Log into the 605L and use the set up wizard to set up the router from scratch.

I've tried the full reset without MAC clone many, many, many times. It never allows wireless connections without my laptop's MAC. I can't figure out why.

13 months. I've called a few times before with setup issues, and been told the MAC clone will make it work. No other solutions were offered.

Hmmm...never seen it where MAC clone is needed to make WiFi work...

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

OK. That would be nice. I'm not at home right now, but I will be home this evening (US Central Time). I'll make another post when I'm available.

I think we keep missing connection here. Let me know a time frame and I'll make sure I'm online...
