So is the DGL-5500 worth buying yet?
« on: February 08, 2014, 05:03:57 AM »

Reading the reviews on line most of them refer to the 5500 wireless performance which is great but if you are a gamer and want a gaming router then you want to be hard wired not wireless!

So with that being said how is the gaming performance with this hardwired???

I see there has been firmware issues from the start but improvements with the last FW update but it appears the consensus is this router is still not worth buying right now and it's not even the "best gaming router"?

I may be buying a new router soon since I will need more range in my house but part of me is saying buy the  ASUS RT-N66U.

Anyway please provide your gaming feedback and for those who upgraded from the DGL-4500, did you notice any improvements with online gaming?

Thanks!

IMO, seen mixed experiences with the 5500. Especially with the XB1 release. Problems seem to be getting fixed on MSs part and D-Link is looking into there part. I don't have an XB1 and won't be getting one in my near future.

Over all, it's getting better and better and users are identifying problems well and D-Link as been quick to respond to my queries.

You could have a look at the DIR-868L as an alternative suggested review...  ::)

If you want my honest opinion.

Unless you are technically inclined and enjoy tinkering around with new and untested tech, Wait.

Setting the router up and getting it to function normally was a headache and I'm a networking professional.

There are more streamboost routers hitting the market and if qualcomm controlls the streamboost updates there will be a lot more data synced with the cloud in a few months.

dlink also needs to spend quite a bit of time improving the router firmware itself. Outside of the most basic features and streamboost this router does not have a lot of features that you would expect from a high end router.

I wouldn't categorize this as a high end router either...maybe a high priced home/gaming router for which it's intended...definitely not a high end router.  ::)

Ok, but as compared to the DGL-4500 which, based on the model naming convention this router is meant to replace the 5500's features and capabilities are positively anemic.

Well your statement seems me bit confusing, however the DGL-5500 has the new line of UI and yes, the features seen on the 4500 were some what removed on the 5500 since this router is supposed to be automatically handling most of the operations. Yes the 4500 and DIR series routers are have more granular features to work with. The 5500 I presume was not intended to have this granular feel and use that most people know with the old generation routers. The 5500 is the follow on to the 4500.

It depends what kind of environment the router will be used in.  StreamBoost is amazing and will outshine the current QoS that other routers use.  So if you need a low ping for gaming while other users are streaming/downloading/torrenting then this router will absolutely give you that.  My ping in games barely rises while my bandwidth both UP and DOWN is being used at its max.

Both Wired and Wireless performance is excellent in the current firmware.  5ghz range is a little short but not a big deal.  It takes a little tweaking depending on your devices but overall it's pretty good.

If you are looking for a router with lots of features and StreamBoost isn't needed then there are other routers with a more refined firmware available.  I personally would have got rid of my 5500 a long time ago if it weren't for StreamBoost.  It's just that good.

"high end router" to me is subjective, personally any router that is at or or was at the $200 mark, is a a high end router to me.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback, I am really happy with the DGL-4500 but as stated before, I am moving and will need an additional router.

I was hoping the DGL-5500 was the ticket but it seems to be missing the mark as of right now.  I want a "gaming" router if one even exists.  IMHO, the 5500 should be able to everything the 4500 but only better, especially online gaming but reading the post one here and the reviews it is not noticeable in the real world.

I have a couple of more months so I will continue to keep an eye on firmware upgrades, etc for this router but if I had to choose today, I would probably buy the Asus router.

I think the 5500 does pretty much what the 4500 does over all, specially when it comes to wireless. I haven't had any issues with gaming, XBL or PC.

I would recommend that you review all issues with Asus products. After seeing this, I tend to stick with what I know and feel compfortable with, however thats me:

Not to distract from the DGL series however the DIR series routers do just as well for gaming and general use. I enjoy the DIR series just as much as the DGL series.  ;D Maybe you should review one of those if the 5500 wont work for you.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the input Furry, I will send you a PM on my plans and maybe we can come up with a better  solution than buying a new router for now.

In my experience most of the problems with it can be worked around by disabling wireless altogether.  There are actually bugs in the wireless that will make it drop packets on wired devices if certain devices connect on the wireless (Sony products like the Vita for example).  If you can disable the wireless and use the wireless on something else then the streamboost does a LOT better than any other form of QoS ever has for me in the past at making sure games get the bandwidth they need.  Even when it doesn't recognize a game, and just classifies it as general traffic it still seems to not starve it of bandwidth like routers have done in the past for me.

Theres no need to disable wireless on this router. Even with the new FW, it's working well and it's not dropping any packets that I can tell. As for Sony products, I was told that Sony may not be fully supported in the driver section due to some legalities.  :-\ I don't know the details.

Other than this, the 5500 is working well on both radios. Single seems much better than before.
