I am having some issues with this router, at least my basic diagnostics say so. I switched from 10 mbps cable to 30 mbsps, but it seem i am running even slower than before. All my devices are receiving less bandwidth compared with what I had with the 10 mbps. Connecting modem directly to PC yeild 30 mbps down and 10 mbps up as promised. Once the router is connected, everything winds down significantly.

Speedtest on the 10 revealed, all devices running, about 2 mbps down still unused and 1.3 mbps up almost all unused.

speedtest for the 30 revealed, all devices running, about 4.51 mbps down unused, and 8.89 mbps up unused.

It should be better with the 30, but for some reason its not. I have no idea where the problem is, but it is for sure in the router. I have tried various setting changes, like activating WLAn segment, did nothing. no QoS or no port forwarding is active. I also changed NAT from restricted to endpoint independent for both UDP and TCP. WLAN is set to mixed, at 20/40 mhz broadcast and also using WPA2 personal with TKIP.

FW is 1.04.

The old cable modem was the Motorola. The new one is a Thompson. I am not sure where the issue is.

Some help woould be appreciated.

• Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
• What new ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
• For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

u]Router and Wired Configurations[/u]
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

• Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
• Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
• Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
• Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
• Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
• Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
• If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
• Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
• Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
• Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
• WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
• Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.
• Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

I have devices connected with wires and pcs and phones connected through wifi..so its both wired and wifi.

I just tried the reset switch it did not do any thing. I had to unplug my outer then plug it back in as i changed the WLAN segment to off(router froze i guess) since my wifi printer was not communicating with my pc.

I distributel 30 mbps cable. Modem is thompson DCM475 and it connected through the cable it came with, it states CAT 5E. doing the MTU procedure as outlined, I get 1474 where the fragment packet arrives (all four packets) so I add 28 to it and I get 1498 as the MTU value.

The router has 1500. I have done most of the suggestion mentioned. wan port speed deos not work, when i det it 1000mbps. so i set it back to auto. uPnP is active, ipv4 multicast is active, i disabled ipv6 as there were no address under it. I do not have conflicts either with any of my devices, they all have their ips assigned, either auto or i have assigned them very end of the range.

I am stumped. I think the WLAN segment made a slight difference but would loose com with the printer.

About the LAN cable. I have a able here that says Hyper Grade CAT V 4596. <-- is this any significant? other than that i have all cables that state CAT 5E.

Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch? If not, please try this and set up the router from scratch.

Your ISP modem supports 1000Mb connections from what I read about it. Possible that the ISP modem could be faulty or needs to be reset.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I am located in Quebec, Canada. I think I will purchase a bundle of cat6 cables for all my wired devices.

I never turn on QoS.

Factory reset was not performed before and after the last FW update. As I mentioned I have still not performed any Factory reset.

I would be glad to have someone review my router settings.

Also, is there a way to know if the modem is faulty or not? Like some kind of fault check test?

One more thing, the Cat 5E cables that I have say on them 350 MHz. I looked at some Cat 6, they are available at 500 - 550 MHz. I'm not sure if getting Cat 6 is worth it?

I did reset of the modem and router then set it up from scratch. It seems that the connections has improved a great distance. I am getting speedtest results to be around 15-17 mbps down and 9-10 mbps up when all my devices are running (wired and wifi).

The only question that remains is should I change the cables to CAT6? Mine are rated at 350 MHz, the cat 6 i found on sale are rated at 500-550 MHz.

Well, I purchased some cat6 cables should arrive by the end of next week. I'll see if it made any difference (finger crossed).

I will post any update as soon as I have one. Thanks for all your help so far.

One last question, should modify the mtu value from 1500 to 1502, as that is what i got from the mtu calculation?

no, 1500 is max for MTU values...

If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.

IF your ISP isn't natively supporting IPv6 via the ISP modem, then it's recommended to use the Local Only for this setting on the router.

Well everything does seem to be running smoothly since I changed the cables to CAT6.

I do have another type of question regarding using proxy on my DIR 645 router. I would like my IPs to be masked from the outside world since I torrent a lot.

Or should I make a new topic?

Your LAN networks is masked by the ISP modem's IP address...unless you want to mask that. You'll need to use other alternatives to mask that I suppose. I don't know a way to do that.
