On/Off switch sticking
« on: February 11, 2014, 11:32:08 AM »

My DNS-323 started powering off a minute after powering on. I found that the push button stays depressed so that after it does a power on sequence, it finds the button is still down and powers off. Pulling the front cover and reinserting solved it for a few days, but now its doing it again around 50% of the times I power it on.

In the cover there is a piece of black plastic attached to the on/off button and hinged to move in and out, with a bar that presses the internal microswitch.  I would have expected a spring under it to force it to return to normal position after being pressed.

OK - so it's not what you expected - not a whole lot we can do about that is there?

Did you try searching, either the forums (or google) to see if this was a common problem, maybe D-Link had a design error, in which case you should find many folks complaining about it, and, in fact, even you should have/would have seen the problem a looooong time ago (like when you took it out of the box).

Personally I would suggest you take a close look at the switch "actuator" - you'll find it's not actually hinged, and you'll probably find that your is broken - it is designed so that it flexes and returns to the original position without a spring - less parts, less cost - and bearing in mind that mine has worked for over six years, I'd say time proven effective.

A spot of glue might take care of your problem.

I think you may have the solution. I've snapped off the metal "shield" over the black plastic and its not hinged, but spot tacked in two places at the left and right to the main part of the plastic cover and depends on the flex of the plastic to act as a spring. One of those tack points is broken, so its flexing at an angle. I have to try and ease some thick hot stuff glue in the right place, going to be tricky unless I remove then entire metal cover plate. I'll try and use some mini clamps, to hold things while I glue.

I doubt these parts were intended to be used constantly. Personally, I have turned my unit off in over a year.

Glad you seemed to find a solution though.

Probably not.  I have a  DNS 321 and a DNS 323.- Both are used 99%  for backups, and the backups are only run from 10pm till 6 pm, so I power them off at other times.

The 321 has been running for 5 years, the 323 I purchased used and has been running for 3 years - so I think that's a pretty good record.
