Set up new disk in DNS320
« on: February 17, 2014, 04:19:14 AM »

I have a DNS 320 working fine with WD 2TB and now wish to add further 2TB disk for backup (not raid). The Dlink setup does not pick up the share-center within Windows 8.1 with the new disk only installed. From another post I understand that the setup software is not Windows 8.1 compatible. I ran dlink setup, existing and latest, on an old Win xp laptop and that does not recognize the share center either.
All I want to do is have my new drive formatted and recognized by laptops and pads over a LAN, is there anyway this can be achieved within Windows 8.1?
Might the best approach be to format the new disk as ext3 and then add it into the sharecenter?

Just use the NAS webUI to setup and configure the new drive.

Thanks for your reply and suggestion.
I tried accessing the DNS320 through firefox but without success. I used all the options given in the Help sticky.

If you enter the DNS-320 IP address in a browser using a PC on the same LAN as the DNS-320, do you get as far as the web UI login page?  Please describe what happens.

When using firefox on win8.1 or winxp I just get a time out, nothing else.
I had recently reset the DNS320, as previously I could not access the box due to password issues - this was from a now dead laptop.

Log into your router web UI and visually check the connected devices table to make sure you're using the correct IP address.  There's a chance the IP address changed during a router or DNS-320 reboot or device disconnect, especially if you're using DHCP without an IP reservation or static IP.

Sound advise, thanks. Yes I had the wrong IP address - with the correct address all DNS320 menu options came up as required and the existing disk with its partitions and usage was visible within WIN8.1. :D :D

I swapped out the existing disk, replacing it with the intended second disk for formatting, but the DNS320 didn't recognize its existence, responding with 'no disk'. I know this new disk works as I had accessed it with data through an external USB caddy. I then reinstated the original disk which wasn't picked up either. Tried them both again after resetting the NAS box, but no recognition. The NAS box itself appears on the LAN. None of the disk leds show up, blue or amber.

Subsequently checked both disks with a USB caddy and they fire up and work fine.

I have yet to read through the forum for similar issues, but wondered if I might have damaged the box during the insertion process, although both slots are no longer responding.

Any ideas or helpful urls? Do I have a dead DNS320?

First, try unplugging the DNS-320 and see if that helps. Although I suppose it's possible, I doubt you damaged the SATA connectors in both bays. If both HDDs were formatted with Linux, you may want to try mounting one of the HDDs in a Windows PC, reformat, and delete the partition(s) to remove any traces of Linux that may (potentially) be confusing the DNS-320.

Finally, please see the following FAQ post for future reference: DCS ShareCenter - Should I Use DHCP, Static IP, or Reserved IP Address? (I suggest you reserve an IP address for the ShareCenter in your router)

A couple of things.

Are you sure that the disk LEDs do not light with disks inserted?  If so, and you have a spare SATA disk, try using that as well just to confirm.

If the LEDs still do not light and you have proved the disks are in working order (USB caddy) then the disk subsystem of the DNS-320 appears to be faulty.  I the NAS is under warranty, return it for replacement.

Our experience is that some equipment can work for years in a particular configuration, even with components that are borderline defective, but when they are switched off and then on again the startup electrical flow kills them - the problem is that there is no way of telling that in advance.

Thanks for both your replies.

I disconnected the DNS-320 box from the power, reconnected, switch on, magic, the blue drive light came on and the drive became accessible through Firefox.
Tried formatting the new drive but the process stopped at 14%. Shut every thing down, restart, same again, 14%. Shut off DNS-320, remove and reinsert disk, back to original problem with no disk being registered either in Firefox or blue light on NAS box. Shut down, etc, blue disk light on, attempting format but no progress beyond 0%. Now cannot switch off NAS box from front panel so disconnect power, restart, disk light on but does not stop flashing. Firefox shows no disk.

Enough for one morning. ???

The DNS 320 is about two years old, from Amazon, and has performed fine until now.
I will try for a replacement under warranty, if still valid. Checked, only a one year warranty.

Any further suggestions? I may buy the D-Link DNS 320L.

Since you have access to the web UI, there are a few things left for you to try.

  • You can try performing a factory reset. While the DNS-320 is powered up, press and hold the reset button on the rear of the unit for > 9 seconds. This procedure will erase all user settings, but retain whatever firmware version is currently installed.
  • What firmware version is installed on the DNS-320? Firmware earlier than v2.00 does not support advanced format technology (AFT) HDDs. In any case, there's no harm updating (or reinstalling) the firmware to see if that helps, especially if this HDD formatting is managed through the firmware itself.

Upgraded firmware from 2.02 to 2.03 and was able to connect with new WD 2TB HD. Started format but only reached 1% format before the process stalled. Checked led which now showed amber. Tried again after reset, same result. Reinstalled original WD 2TB disk, which did not show up in web UI or front led light.

Appreciate your continued assistance.

Reset the device within the web UI and replaced new WD 2TB disk into DNS-320  Detected  the new disk and formated to 20% before the disk powered down and the process hung. Replaced disk with original but not detected within web UI or front led panel.

Placed new disk 2 into USB caddy, reformatted within windows, and copied test data across, no issues.

Bit fed up and tired with the whole process now, although I have become very familiar with the web UI.

Will be reviewing my NAS box options as this box is clearly flaky.

I just realized that I posted my reply inside your prior post. . . that's a flub on my part as I pressed the wrong button (forum admin access).  I pulled the content and pasted below.

Keep us posted on your progress...  ;)

This may not help, but try the factory reset procedure. You can do this from within the firmware (same page as the firmware upgrade I believe). Before you perform this procedure, save a Configuration Settings file to your PC so you can easily restore your user settings afterwards.

Well my nice shiny new NAS box DNS320L arrived today from Amazon and I was able to immediately format my 'new' WD 2GB disk through htp settings. Installed existing WD 2GB disk, the one containing data, into the NAS box and both disks came up yellow!

Removed newly formatted disk and then SMART tested existing WD 2GB data disk, which passed. :D

Removed both disks, reinserted 'new' disk only and attempted instal using basic D-Link software, agreed to format disk again, now shows blue on NAS box. :)

Windows 8.1 cannot find this new box. My Nexus 7, picks up the device, but says 'the network name cannot be found' when I try to copy any data to the new disk.
Any suggestions?

My other question is - how do I install my old DNS 320 data disk into my new DNS 320L while preserving its data and without needing to reformat the disk? I do not want any raid setup, just two independent disks, disk two backs up disk two.
