Hello, first post :)

Just finished setting up my DIR-655 and I love the thing ;D

Replaced a "Brand L" router on which the WAN port fried itself after 2 years. Actually glad it did, since it prompted me to get a better router with more features.

Anyway, my question. Looking at the Sharepoint USB option -- very interesting. I obtained a static IP from my ISP so I could run my Panny webcam. What would be REALLY cool would be if I could mount a USB thumb drive on the router and run an FTP server off it, from the router itself (i.e., my PCs do not have to be powered on and running an FTP server).

Yes, would require embedding the FTP server in the router firmware. Major feature enhancement but just wanted to throw it out there.

You 'd better get a WD passport or something. Why?
- risk of negative impact on core router performance
- You would need extra security features also (an extra door to the outside world) on the router since the HDD does not provide them
- Performance would be dismal (looking at the basic performance of USB HDD attached to router)
- If Shareport cannot even handle concurrent useage of USB devices inside the LAN...you can fill in the rest yourself  :D

Yeah, I know it's an old thread, but for me it's a new problem. All of the "con" posts above are probably right, but then there's that nagging question on the back of my mind: "how come other routers can do it?".

Nice. Let me know what you think of it and share more of your experience running FTP via sharepoint. I will try it myself and see how it goes.
