Computers cannot ping each other and see each other on LAN
« on: October 26, 2007, 09:32:32 PM »

1 desktop: Windows XP Pro SP2 IP:192.168.13.14 Subnet:255.255.255.0 Default Gateway:192.168.13.13 DNS:192.168.13.13  - Lan adapter 1000 Mbps
1 laptop: Windows XP Pro SP2 IP:192.168.13.15 Subnet:255.255.255.0 Default Gateway:192.168.13.13 DNS:192.168.13.13 - Wireless adapter 54g
Router DIR-655 firmware 1.10 (updated a few hours ago) but I had this issue with older firmwares as well (1.03; 1.04) Router IP:192.168.13.13 Subnet:255.255.255.0
All computers have Kaspersky Internet Security 7 installed.
The desktop can ping itself and he can ping the router.
The laptop can ping itself and he can ping the router.
The router can ping the desktop and the laptop.
The laptop cannot ping the desktop. The desktop cannot ping the laptop.
And they cannot see each other on the network so I can`t use file and printer sharing.
Both computers can access the internet and the router.

What I tried:
Disabled Kaspersky on both computers (even though it is set up to allow ICMP protocol and file and print sharing for LAN aka Trusted Zone). Windows firewall is disabled on both as well (double checked). Stopped windows firewall service from Control Panel>Administrative toos>Services.
Changed NETBIOS setting for TCP/IP from Default to Enable for both computers.
The computers are on the same workgroup. Both computers have the guest account enabled.
I enabled "Use simple file sharing" on both computers.
Installed NETBIOS and IPX/SPX protocols.
Tried different IP addresses for computers and router. Tried subnet mask 255.255.0.0
Tried every scenario from Microsoft Knowledge Base related to network access issues.
On the router: disabled SPI, anti-spoof checking, disabled extra wireless protection, disabled MAC filtering. I don`t use DHCP.
I use WPA AES encryption for the wireless.

If anyone has any suggestion on what to try next please let me know.
Thank you.

Run a security software from one of the machines, then ping that computer from the other computer. Check the LOG message from the security software. It will tell you weather someone requested the ICMP or not. Also replace the cable and try with a different computer. By the way, what are your operating systems? Last option would be running a crossover cable with static IP on both PCs or using a packet filter software to examine the TCP.

The operating systems are mentioned at the beginning of my post. i just changed the cable and will post an update. i don`t see a reason to run security software and look for ICMP packets because as long as the computers can ping the router and the router can ping the computers, it means that the software it`s not blocking ICMP.

Changing the cable hasn`t done anything but I fixed the issue.
I am using the nForce4 onboard networking card. Under Advanced properties it has a function called "VLAN support" that was enabled. Once i disabled it the two computers can ping each other.
If there is anyone with a similar issue make sure that VLAN is DISABLED!!
