Fan or not to Fan

I recently got a 323 and updated the Fm to 1.07

Operating temps run from 100f to 111f but I don't see the internal fan running at any point. I don't see any kind of configurable threshold in the web gui to have the fan turn on.

At what temp can I expect to see the fan start running?

Thanks in advance for any info someone can provide.

It should kick on at about 114 degrees Fahrenheit

Well that's odd, I just checked my status, it says 111F and the fan is already running

Well I think i'll be putting the 114F to the test this weekend I just picked up 2 of the Hitachi 1 TB drives so I suspect it will be running a little hotter now.

fyi- manufacturers recommend 35`C/95`F as the max preferable temp for their drives to run continuously at, and 55`C/131`F as the temperature at which failures will occur (data loss due to overheating, so some such problem).

personally, the lowest temp my drives have ever run in a dns-323 enclosure is 33`C, and i have the dns firmware set to shut down the drives if they hit 50`C...

Well got my 2 / 1TB drives and the unit is running anywhere from 104-111'F and i've yet to see the fan turn on. I think I set my temp threshold to the same range as you with the email notification on. Touch wood no problems yet.

Normally the fan is off till the temp. goes up tu 45°C.
Then it works so long, till the unit cools down to 43°C and then the fan will be turned off.

yes, the fan is normally off especially when the unit hasn't been activated for a period of time. Most of the time, my device is so freaking quiet I don't know if it's actually on, until I access the directories and then the drives kick in and the fan speeds up.. But the fan hauls ass when it gets pretty hot. I wouldn't worry about it..
