DIR-835 sends some pages to router admin login screen
« on: March 15, 2014, 10:00:54 PM »

I was just on a forum I visit regularly, worked fine earlier today. Now it's sending me to the DLink admin login page using my regular browser (Firefox) but it sends me to the forum fine when I try it with IE.  (??)

Product Page: DIR-835    Hardware Version: A1      Firmware Version: 1.02

When I ping the site, the IP of that site seems to show properly.

Any ideas what is causing this?  I happened last week on my other PC (a laptop in the other room). I went to Facebook and it sent me to the Dlink admin login screen.  A few minutes later it put me through to Facebook just fine.

What's causing this?

Link>Welcome!

  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. For the DGL-5500, review this for Streamboost information and settings: Furry's DGL-5500 Review
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.

Be sure to log into the Admin account on the router.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

I'm using Win7, Firefox 27.0.1 (latest)

I had a different DLink router before this one, which I've had for a month or two now. I upgraded my cable to 120mbit so I needed a faster router (old one maxed at 100mbit).

I have NEVER had this problem before, and now I've had it on 2 separate machines.

I'm on a wired connection (Cat5E) on both machines.

Cable company is Cogeco. Model is Cisco DPC3008.

Net speed is 120mbit down / 10mbit up.

I closed FF and reloaded it and went to that web page and it loaded fine - but that was about 5mins after the last try, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. Could have just been coincidence.

Keep an eye on it...I have this router as well and have never had any issues with it regarding this. However i mainly use IE for managing the router.

Possible some browser developments in FF since all browsers are updated frequently like FF, Chrome and Opera.

Additional info:

I just remembered, it's not my browser - another family member who runs a vanilla version of Internet Explorer had the same problem, which was actually how I initially found out about it.  It was sending her to the DLink admin login screen instead of the site she was trying to get to.  So it does it both on Firefox on 2 separate computers, and on IE on the 3rd computer.

Ensure that any malware isn't present on the PCs.

I'd do a factory reset on the router and set it up from scratch..

If this doesn't fix it, then I would update FW using the following:
FW Update Process

Factory reset, update FW, factory reset then setup from scratch.

All my PCs run Norton AV, Malwarebytes, and HitManPro, and WinPatrol, and I do regular scans - no malware.

I updated the firmware last night to latest.  Maybe they fixed something from version 1.02 to 1.03 - hopefully...

Wow, thats alot of 3rd party security programs...I wonder if something in those programs is happening...

I might disable some or all as a test and see...I've never seen this issue before...However I'm at v1.04...which is the latest...

Keep us posted on v1.03...

Norton just scans for antiviruses, Malwarebytes is a WAY better blocker of live stuff on web pages, and Winpatrol just keeps programs from altering my startup programs.  So it's basically just Norton AV and Malwarebytes running.  HitMan I just run once in a blue moon to do a scan.  It seems there's always ONE program that finds a tracking cookie that another program missed.

But those are on my PC.  My laptop in the other room doesn't run anything except the scanner that comes with Win7 (it's a HTPC which doesn't get any software installed on it) and it had the same issue, when I tried to go to Facebook, one time, it sent me to the DLink Admin login screen.

Does ANYONE know why ANYONE would get directed to that login screen without deliberately going to it via the IP address of the router?

I would update FW  to v1.04 using the following:
FW Update Process

DISABLE ALL security SW on the wired LAN PC before doing this. USE IE or FF with all browser add-ons disabled before updating FW. Factory reset the router, send the FW file, then factory reset once more and set up the router from scratch.

I presume this is a configuration either on the router or on your network that for some reason has the routers web page cached. I have not seen this issue on my 835. And no body else and reported this or similar issues.

Are you using any network management SW like netmagic or similar?

Nothing like that. I unboxed the 835, plugged it in, set my password for wireless connections so I could use my phone on my wifi at home, and that was it.  Other than that it's as it came.

Hmmm, I never saw this after un boxing mine.

Just seems like something is being cached some where...

Let us know what happens after the FW update...

It hasn't happened again since I made this thread, but then again, it only happened 3x before (all on the different computers in the house - my pc, my netbook, and another family member's laptop).  So far so good though, but it hasn't really been long enough to tell.
