DIR-645 drops and reconnects multiple times per day
« on: March 18, 2014, 08:55:36 AM »

I have a DIR-645 with the latest firmware that has been acting up recently.

Many times throughout the day, it will drop the connection to the ISP and reconnect.  This usually takes a minute or so to occur, and wouldn't be a huge deal if it wasn't for my VPN connection to work gets reset and takes a lot longer to reconnect.

I looked at the log for one of these times and found this (the xxx.xx entries I changed so it wouldn't show my IP address):

Is there a setting that I need to change on my router to keep this from happening?  It is a bit annoying to have this happen multiple times per day.

Thanks in advance.

Link>Welcome!

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. For the DGL-5500, review this for Streamboost information and settings: Furry's DGL-5500 Review
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

I made the changes you suggested and it is still occurring.  It is only a couple times per day, but it is very annoying when it happens.  Because of the VPN my work uses, it sometimes takes 15 minutes or more before it will let me log back in.

Any other suggestions?

If you could fill in some the questions presented, maybe we can help you narrow this down more. The more we know the better we can give you feed back. I know that when I had my 645 online, my roommate uses passive VPN I think. Never had any issues with it.

Does the same thing happen If you turn ON Traffic Shaping and QoS?

Does this happen if you directly connect the PC with VPN to the ISP modem and by bass the router, does the connect drop then?

Cable ISPs usually always use 1500 for MTU values....

This is still happening every day.

It happens no matter what Traffic Shaping or QoS setting are there.

It does not happen when I plug directly in to the modem.  At least is hasn't that I have noticed.

When I look at the log, every time it happens I see this message:

DHCP: Client performing a DHCP renew.

Why would the router be doing that?  Is that something that the Modem is sending to the router or is the router initiating that renew?

Appreciate any help you can give.  It is very frustrating.  I don't want to have to go back to my old router.

"DHCP: Client performing a DHCP renew."

I presume this is referring to the connected PC? Is this a wired or wireless device?

  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • What security mode are you using
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

This is a wired PC

I have 2 PCs hard wired to this router directly.  When it happens, it keeps all devices from accessing the internet, both wired and wireless.

The message I posted was from the Dlink router log file.

I do have other routers in my house for coverage purposes.  They are all on different channels, however.

I recommend that you check the NIC drivers on the wired PCs and configuration of the NICs.

I would do this. Turn OFF ALL other devices, wired and wireless and any other wireless APs and extenders save 1 wired PC. Disconnect all from the router accept the one wired PC.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
  • Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Run some tests or let the one PC run for a while. Then graduate turning ON the next wired PC and test. Continue to graduate devices and test...

Keep us posted...Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I've never seen my 645 behave in this manor...

This is still happening.  Could it be my modem that is the issue?  I was able to log into my modem and check the logs after this recently happened.  Here is what I found:

2014-04-17 10:42:39   4-Error   C401.0   DCC-ACK not received

Does anyone know what these errors are and if they are a result of a faulty modem, or a problem with the router?  It looks fishy when the modem log says "Modem Is Shutting Down and Rebooting..."

Thanks again for all your help.

Possible...

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

5 series models are getting old and out of date, i'd recommend getting into a SB 6 series Motorola modem, i.e.e 6120, 6121, 6141 or 6180. Can found on ebay, amazon, best buy or frys if your located in the U.S.

This is still occurring, but it appears to be a line problem with my cable provider, not a router issue.  I get the errors that the modem is rebooting every time this happens and the T3 Timeout errors in the modem log.

I am switching to Uverse a week, so hopefully this issue will not occur after that.

Thanks for all your help with this.
