Successor to DIR-655?
« on: March 23, 2014, 11:14:05 AM »

I bought this router back in college and have been looking to replace it with something newer. So what is the successor to the DIR-655? I have Comcast internet, 25 MBPS down. I game, I stream. What rekindled my faith in D-Link was this router. The UI was immaculate. And I'd like to stick to D-Link because of this.

So what do you think?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

While the 655 first came out, Rev A was released, then Rev B, now Rev C just same out this year and has new features. There was the DIR-645 and 657. The DIR-636L is a great router for the price and performance as well. These are all single 2.4Ghz band routers.

Do you have any 5Ghz supporting devices? Depending on the condition of your current 655, it's possible to either add-on a 5Ghz wireless AP or just upgrade the WiFi on the 655 with dual band AP as well..maybe get into some AC mode WiFi.

Or if you just want a new router, maybe a DIR-868L would be something to review...

I don't know if I have any 5 GHz supporting devices. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and will be purchasing a new laptop this week. Desktop is hard wired in.

You'll need to refer to those device Mfr support site to see if they are 5Ghz supporting. If they are then it would give you new options...

I verified the Samsung Note 3 IS 5 GHz compatible.

I'm not sure if the Lenovo IdeaPad G510 is. I did some searching to see if it would be, but found no information related to it.

Might call up Lenovo and ask if the Pad is 5Ghz supporting...At least the phone is so possibly you could add on a dual band DAP to the 655...

I checked with Lenovo. I am actually going to get a U430 as a result of much debate and research (http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Ultrabook-Touch-Screen-i7-4500u-processor/dp/B00HJX1ZKK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395620745&sr=8-1&keywords=u430) and they said it was not 5 GHz compatible.

Also, I'll have friends over who will want to connect to WiFi and I know for a fact they will not have 5 GHz compatible devices.

Well you could still upgrade the Lenovo to 5Ghz using a 5Ghz WiFI USB adapter for mobility or connect to a 5Ghz AP using the wired LAN connection when your sitting at a desk.

I'm not interested in really adding an external USB adapter just to get 5 GHz. Also I do not sit at my desk and use my laptop.

Well, there you go. I guess keeping the current router would be your suggested option.

It's either replace it or find out why it seems to be cutting out on me. I've not had this issue until I moved. And it's just a one floor apartment.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

If there are many other WiFi signals around you and you have a small area in your apt, try this:
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

    • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
My SSID is WINTERNET IS COMING. No one else is using it.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
802.11n only.
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
It was set to 802.11n, but I switched it to Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g.
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
I set it to Auto 20/40 MHz.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
It was set to "Enable Auto Channel Scan", but I unchecked it and set it to 6.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
Security mode is WPA-Personal. WPA Mode is set to WPA2 Only, Cipher Type was set to AES, I set it to TKIP and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
Just my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and laptop on wireless. Desktop is hard wired in.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
Not in my apartment, but I live in big brick apartment on the fourth floor, which is not the top level floor.
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Over 30.I lost count after 30. I ended up picking up the Android app though if we need to further use it.
Turned on short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection. I couldn't find HT 20/40MHz Coxistence, under Advanced / Advanced Wireless.

Wow, looks like a lot of people on chl 6, I recommend you change to chl 11 or 1.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Ya you are in a WiFi congested area...

About the same amount of people are on 1, 6, and 11. So what do you suggest now?
