Remote access amd port 3389
« on: March 28, 2014, 05:15:40 PM »

I want to remotely log in to my Windows XP Pro box from a Linux box on my network using rdesktop. I only want users on the LAN to access this machine, NOT from the WAN. Am I correct that this is the default setup?

Is this using a D-Link router? Id refer to the MS support site regarding remote desktop information. Usually no port configuration is needed on the LAN side.

Sorry, I thought I had listed it. It is a DIR-655. Windows documentation says to use Windows Firewall, but I'd rather block port 3389 at the router. I've seen a lot of internet posts about NOT being able to login from the WAN, but I want the opposite, to block it completely. I have experimented and I can login from the LAN, but I need to know if I have to do something to block the WAN. Apparently port forwarding is needed to unblock the WAN, implying the default is blocked. Is that correct?

Yes, you don't need to block the port on the WAN side. I use RDP here and there on my network and it works great.
