HD 89% full and i cannot copy any more files
« on: April 14, 2014, 01:31:23 AM »

I have DNS 320 revB. I have put 2 WD 3TB RED WD30EFRX-68AX9N0 in it as RAID 1. After formatting i had 2,68TB. And now i have 89% full and i cannot copy any more files on NAS. Reading from NAS and copying from it and deleting works. When i free some space i can copy again on NAS, like disk is full. It happens always at 89%. Quotas are off. I have installed new firmware a couple days ago and problem remained.

When problems appear i get this message:
There is a problem accessing <folder where i am copying files on NAS>
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again.

Please help

What are you using to see the amount of free space on the RAID array?

If you have the array mapped to a drive letter run dir<drive> from a command prompt this will give you the amount of space used and the amount free.  If the amount free is smaller than the size of the file you are trying to copy, there is your problem.

The other thing you should be looking at is how you use the files on your NAS.  If some is just storage then you should consider moving some of them to a stand alone drive that can be stored in a safe place so freeing up space for those files that are in everyday use.

I see how much space i have left with NAS UI (with IE) and it says "2748.2GB / 300.5GB Available " and with windows explorer (i have mapped it to a drive letter) (2.68TB/300GB). By using dir from comand prompt i get 300GB free but in bytes.

If the amount free is smaller than the size of the file you are trying to copy, there is your problem.
:)
I can put another 10GB of anything on HDD, and after that it wont accept even 100MB and it should have 290GB. I have tried several times. 290 GB is point where it wont accept any more data, and i must delete something if i want to copy another file onto HDD.

I use my HDD for storage and as media center and it should have enough space for now. Problem is that is says that it has 290 GB free but it acts as it is full!

Hi,
I don't know if there is some kind of "effective" limit for these drives but I have read in a few places that at least for windows machines, as a drive approaches less than 10% of it's useable space, it becomes increasingly problematic and will often throw up various types of errors because of needing to run programs and the size of windows swap files etc.  I would think that this would be less of an issue on what is basically a linux box but I simply don't know.  I would consider checking with WD support in addition to checking here.  Until you get a better answer, this is my guess.

I don't fully understand the behavior of the DNS-320 on-board "Applications", but I'm also wondering if you have any services or Applications running on the DNS-320 that may be trying to reserve HDD space, reducing the effective storage.

300 GB is too much. It is not system drive, so no swap file there. And i could fill any other drive to the last byte. Although this is my first WD red.

How can i check what services or apps are running?
I sometimes run p2p app. Most of the time it is disabled. I was also wondering about that but i couldn't find any setting that could be the problem. (maybe i dont know where to look) I also sometimes run ftp server. Again, none of the settings seems to be the problem. I have 3 users, one for PC, one for my smartphone when i am in house WIFI, and one for smartfone when i am out of house WIFI network. Only setting that looks to me that could be the problem are quotas for users, but i never set any of them and they are disabled. All aps came with NAS, and i didnt install any 3rd party aps. I didnt even try other apps.

You can navigate through the listed "Applications" and disable the ones you aren't using.  Services like FTP may use additional CPU, but won't allocate HDD space. Citing a real world example, a number of DNS-325/345 ShareCenter owners noticed missing HDD storage that was ultimately tied back to the Surveillance Center add-on storing recorded video as hidden files resulting in massive discrepancies in available storage. I don't believe the DNS-320 has that application in particular, but this example does illustrate how an add-on can play havoc with reported storage.

I went through all apps and they are disabled (where that setting exist). I also ran extended smart test (i takes loooooong time to complete) and result is PASS. It seems that i will have to buy another 3TB HD and put all my data on it and then reformat NAS and hope it will solve my problem. If anyone has any more ideas they are welcome.  :(

By chance did you enable any user/group based quotas?

Hi,
You probably checked already but is the recycle bin enabled?

Do items in the recycle bin count against available storage as reported by Windows?  :-\

I have 2 network shares, Volume_1, and P2P. None of them has recycle enabled.

"Do items in the recycle bin count against available storage as reported by Windows?"  I thought my memory recalled some problems with inaccurate disk space and the recycle bin but after some searching, I am certain it does, but I am not sure that is what is going on here.

Interesting links cable2. Just to try everything i enabled recycle on both shares, and it was empty (i got only Volume_1 Recycle, and not P2P recucle), so i disabled it again.
