dns-323 is turning off daily
« on: May 01, 2014, 12:41:39 AM »

I've had my 323 for quite a while now (long enough to have gotten a second 323 and now a 325 :-).

Beginning about a week ago, the 323 shuts down spontaneously about once per day.

Drives are fine when I bring the device back up.

Is there some type of diagnostic I can/should run, or is this a typical problem indicating end-of-life of the device?

Thanks!

You may be looking at a failing power supply. Since you have a second DNS-323, you can power down the second DNS-323 and test the power supply on the problematic DNS-323 and see if things stabilize.

There was a time, looooong ago, when that would have been my first action. Man, it's been a long time since I supported customers :-)

Good idea -- I'll give it a try. Thanks!

Glad to help. Please post back after your testing and let us know if that was the root cause.  ;)

Another thing to add about power supplies.

They usually start failing because one or more capacitors change value because of heating.   This usually reduces the output voltages and, if you live in an area where power loading is controlled by the power company changing the voltage slightly as a heavy load is applied, this load being detected by a drop in voltage.  That drop in voltage can be enough to cause the power supply to shut down so shutting down the NAS.

We have a client on an industrial estate where there are heavy loads drawn from the power lines that can be easily measured.  We have had to install UPSs on all the computer equipment otherwise it would all shut down when the plant started.

These are the things to consider if the power supply tests out as being OK  (remember that output voltages should be measured under normal load conditions)

Another possible cause is overheating, which may go unnoticed if you do not have the email alerts enabled, although I think this should be logged - this by the way may be a sign of an impending failure.

Shortly before my DNS-323 failed I had daily overtemp shutdowns with the unit sitting on the same shelf (on a 19" comms rack) where it had sat for several years, moving it out of the rack - literally 12" sideways - stopped the shutdowns but the unit died a few weeks later.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
