DIR-825 Speed Issues
« on: May 02, 2014, 07:23:32 PM »

I've had my DIR-825 for awhile now. In my house I have three devices that connect to it.. my PC, which has DMZ on, my cell phone, and a Chromecast unit connected to my television. Occasionally I have family members over, not often, but they connect as well.

Lately my speed has been slow.. I noticed the issue a few weeks ago right before Comcast had an outage. After the outage was over (about 5 hours) it continued. I figured it was Comcast problem. Speed was still decent, so not much of an issue.

My speed from Comcast is advertised as 50Mbps down, but speed tests always showed me about 57Mbps down. My uploads were around 11Mbps. I was using speedguide.net and dslreports.com as my tests (and comcast's website because they wanted me to). I would get those speeds on a consistent basis.

But a few weeks ago my speed dropped to in the 30Mbps - 35Mbps down range, and less than 1Mbps up!! It's been that way ever since. I let it go for awhile.

Now, tonight I just paid my Comcast bill and while I was on their website I notice they offer 105Mbps down for the same price I am paying now. So they upgraded me. I ran speed tests again.

With router: 80Mbps down, less than 1Mbps up.

Without router: Just over 120Mbps down, and just over 11Mbps up.

Any help in trouble shooting this is appreciated.. I run 2.09NA firmware I believe..

Maybe I should just reset the router? Sort of like in the old days if you had a bad problem on Windows 3.11 or XP you'd just format and reinstall fresh?

Link>Welcome!

  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router? when speed testing? Only wired is preferred.
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed? If not then yes, try a factory reset and disable or turn OFF all devices from being connected to the router accept for 1 wired LAN PC.
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS.

1 - Wired.
2 - Will try factory reset in a few minutes. I held off trying until I heard a reply here. But honestly, I didn't change anything in router.. except DMZ on for my PC, reserveration of IP for my PC, and phone, and turned on wireless.
3 - I've been working fine since the firmware update. I've had it a long time now.
4 - Comcast cable.
5 - Model Motorola SB6141
6 - Dynamic IP.
7 - Will also try a new cable. I notice it's only Cat 5 from the modem to the router. I'll purchase two new cables from Monoprice, since they're cheap there.
8 - MTU is 1500.. 1472 + 28. It's set as that in router.

I don't know what it is, but I was in the router config checking MTU and I noticed this:

"Use Unicasting :      (compatibility for some DHCP Servers)"

Figured it can't hurt to turn it off I can always put it back on.

I unchecked that and now my speed is a lot better. Over 117Mbps down / Over 11Mbps up.

But I only get those speeds on Comcast's speed test.. Speedguide reports a lot lower. But at least the Comcast one went up as a result of my change.

Baffles me how much one website changes over another.. Comcast says 117Mbps down, speedguide gets 41Mbps, dslreports gets 33. Uploads are all different.

Glad you found the fix. I'll remember this for some speed issues. Thanks for sharing.

Enjoy.  ;)
