Needs to be rebooted several times a day
« on: May 16, 2014, 03:06:19 AM »

Like the title says, I have to reboot the router to connect to the internet. I can browse in the router no problem. I have had my ISP in to check the lines and replace the modem. The modem has had it's router functionality turned off and the modem is bridged to the DIR-655. When I restart I get 56 -58 MB download speed and everything is good. But when it needs a restart - it will go no where. Any Ideas, I think I have tried everything I can. Is there a button to check to automatically reboot say at 2:00 am?

Link>Welcome!

Routers should not need rebooting serveral times a day. Its indicating that there is a problem...

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
  • Turn off DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. The DST setting is only needed in the NA region. Tools/Time.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Ok..I think I have all the info you asked for:

Hardware version : B1
Firmaware 2.11NA
Region USA
Modem info: Aris Tg862G (Already had an old Ugee modem replaced.)
MTU 1500
New cable, same problem.
Speeds: 60 down and 6 up
Wired
Yes, I have factory reset it.

About the placement. Are you saying my router needs to be 3 ft from the modem and another 3 feet from the gigabit switch?

  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.

I made sure they bridged the modem to the 655. Ran into that problem a couple months ago.

Just making sure sure.

Let us know if you and answer some of the questions presented and try the suggestions. The more we know.

Also, If you had this similar issue before bridging the modem, it could be ISP issue causing the router to stop working:
I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

I tried everything you guys mentioned in the first reply. I did see some speed increase when I turned off Advanced DNS Services. However, 1 hour into gaming I lost connection again. It's very frustrating. The router is maybe 6 mo old.
I had my ISP run a new wire from the pole to the box, and new lines to the modem, TV, and Phones. Nothing solved the problem - so it must be the router itself. Right? I really hope I just got a bad router, because there is nothing more my ISP can do...and they have made this clear.
I have  Time Warner Cable high speed internet/TV/Phones.

How close can the modem and router be plus an 8 port switch?

You sure the ISP modem is bridged and any other WiFi is disabled?

Is QoS and TS enabled?

What kind of gaming do you do? PC or game console?

Does this happen if you by pass the switch as a quick test?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."

One test you can do, remove the DIR-655 router and un-bridge the ISP modem and connect everything to it and run a test...see if same thing happens or not.

3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.

I have this same router however different ISP modem and don't see this issue. I have a 24pt Gb switch connected to mine in the office and a 8pt off it in the living room.

I am sure, the wifi light is off on the modem.  QoS is on, can't find TS (where is that?)
I play games on the PC while my son plays on a console.
When I bypass the router when it crashes, sometimes I can get an IP from the modem and sometimes I can't. I was told that it was setup as modem only and would not work  directly plugged in unless they took the bridge down.  Is it time to see if I can RMA it?

QoS and TS are under Advanced/Qos

So sometimes you are getting and IP address from the ISP modem even though it's setup in modem only?

I'm really not confident this your ISP modem setup or this configuration.
Is the game console PS or Xbox?

So can you test the 655 by connecting in the following manor?

ISP modem> DIR-655<>wired PC and or game console. Don't connect the external switch.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I have tried that, Modem > Router> My PC only, no switch. Same problems, just loses signal intermittently. The console is a PS3. I use teamviewer to help friends out, so I know how it works and would be up for allowing someone access through teamviewer.

I'm wondering if there is a signal problem on the ISP Modem...

Send me a PM with ID and PW and a time frame when we can connect....
