Conntection drops out regularily!
« on: May 17, 2014, 03:02:28 PM »

Hi Community,

For a few weeks my router crashes regularly for about 1-2 seconds. I checked the log and found a repeating procedure everytime it happens:

DHCP: Client send DISCOVER

DHCP: Client receive OFFER from 10.xxx.xxx.x

DHCP: Client send REQUEST, Request IP 85.xxx.xx.xx from 10.xxx.xxx.x.

DHCP: Client receive ACK from 10.xxx.xxx.x, IP=85.xxx.xx.xx, Lease time=2404.

Got new client [60:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx] associated from BAND24G-1.1 (2.4 Ghz)

Got new client [00:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx] associated from BAND24G-1.1 (2.4 Ghz)

Got new client [E8:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx] associated from BAND24G-1.1 (2.4 Ghz)

The lease time(2404) changes every time and seems to be set random between 1900-3600 (seconds).
Also, the lease time is the exact amount of time until the connection drops out again.

Further information:
-my PC is connected via LAN
-A direct connection to the modem causes no problems
-Firmware: 1.04 B11
-ISP Service: Cable
-Modem: Arris Touchstone
-The IP is static (as far as I know)
-the log procedure also shows up when I change an option and save it

Thank you for helping!

EDIT:
Surprisingly, my IP-Adress changed a few Minutes ago. After restarting the Router the leasing time is now always 3600 seconds (which seems to be not enough IMHO).
I will check if my Connection drops off again after an hour and keep this post updated.

EDIT #2:
After an hour the internet crashed again and the lease time now is 3544.. So there is no change at all despite of the changed IP.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem and if modem can't be bridged. If so, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on Router
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Arris Cable Modems and External Routers

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn off DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

Hi FurryNutz,
thank you for responding!

-What region are you located? Germany
-A Factory Reset did not change anything.
-The Router was working with the old Firmware but also with the new one. I don't see the problem there.

-What ISP Modem model # do you have? Touchstone DOCSIS 3.0 (no build in Router)
-Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing? probably dynamic
-What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? UP 100 kbit/s, DOWN 2,5 kbit/s
-Check cable between Modem and Router. Cable seems to be working
-Check ISP MTU requirements. Since it was doing well for a Year, this is probably not the Problem
-For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled. "Always ON" is always on ;)

-Turn off Advanced DNS Services. It is turned off
-Enable Use Unicasting. I enabled it.
-Turn off DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Done.
-Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Also Done.
-If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6. IPv6 is disabled.
-Enable or Disable SPI to test. Both don't change anything.
-Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used. Still no Change.
-Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced. WPS is turned off. But I could not find WISH.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? It was set to automatic. The Modem Supports 1000mb but changing the option did not fix the problem.
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. It is set.

All this did not help at all. The internet still drops off.
A Question for understanding: How should my log look like, if it would work well?
Is it possible that my ISP causes the problem?

Furthermore: Did you ever see, that the lease time is changing randomly?

Thank you for helping!

  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

Do both wired and wireless connection exhibit this behavior?

  • Turn OFF DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.
