DIR-628, Macbook, and Canon Pixma Printer.
« on: June 12, 2009, 03:43:25 PM »

So I just bought a D-Link DIR-628 router. Works great! My problem is that I'm trying to get it to recognize my printer via the shareport. I've tried with both with and without a USB hub linked to the Shareport. Originally I did it with the USB hub, with my WD external drive and my Canon Pixma MP160 printer hooked up to it. It recognize my external drive, but not the printer. So I unhooked the external drive and plugged in the printer...and it still doesn't recognize it. The drivers for the printer have been installed on my Macbook. AND- just to complicate things more, I'd like my fiance's PC (which is hard-wired to the router) to recognize it too...the drivers are also installed on his PC, but again, the Shareport Utility doesn't seem to recognize the printer.

Any ideas? Is it okay to have the USB hub plugged into the shareport with both the things attached to it? Or do I need to just have the printer plugged in? Why isn't the Utility recognizing it? I'd really like to get this figued out...I'm tired of having to crouch by the printer to print everything!

How can I fix this?

Hey I am not sure if this will help you but it worked for me.

Best of luck....
Macrugger- Thanks so much for the tips! It worked for me!

Everyone- If you are still having trouble and haven't already done so- I suggest you give Macrugger's method a try. Here is his instructions as posted above. I think the key step was deleting the printer in system preferences/printers, first- which I had not done previously.

For the record here is my setup (and this was done on June 14th 2011):
macbook pro 6,2 intel core i7 2.66GHz
OSx snow 10.6.7
Wireless Router N Range booster D-link DIR-628
Router Hardware version A2, Firmware Version 1.25NA (Downloaded from D-link site- search 'DIR 628')
Printer Cannon MP280
Software/App SX Virtual Link (downloaded from link in the instructions Below)

Pre Instructions:
If you have been trying without success I suggest you do the following before starting.
-Uninstall all versions of SX Virtual Link that you have installed. (use the uninstaller provided, or use appzapper  http://www.appzapper.com/)
-Uninstall all versions of D-Link Shareport that you installed. (same methods)
-delete all installation files of the above as to prevent confusion or mistakes (+empty trash)
-Close all, and restart.

1.A  In the System Preference in Mac, delete your printer.
1.B  Restart.
2.  Download and use Silex utility rather than the d-link re branded version.  Much more stable.
http://www.silexamerica.com/support/software/svl.html
2.B  restart.
3.  Start your printer first, open the utility and connect, print your document.
3.  To go from printing a document to scanning a document, you must disconnect the link, turn off the printer, and start again.  The utility does not work well with multifunction devices.

Hope this helps.
