is there any settings i should know about that will improve my wifi speed.
the speed i get on my desktop pc connected to the router via ethernet is about 90Mbps download.
when i do a speedtest on my laptop via WIFI (when I am in the same room) i get about 20MBps.
when i move into the bedroom which is only 2 walls apart i get a noticeably slower speed & also my connection losses connectivity some of the time.

i still have my old router in storage. a dlink 655.
can i set this up as a wireless repeater and stick this router in my bedroom?

• What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
• Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
• What region are you located?

• What wireless devices do you have connected?
• Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
• Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Recommended setting on WiFi:

• 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
• Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
• Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
• What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
• If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Your speeds on the Wireless Laptop may differ due to the LTs limitations on his adapter and it's design. We don't recommend testing wireless speeds as many factors and variables on WiFi can effect accurate speeds results. Only speeds testing on wired LAN is suggested.

i have changed some settings around.
channel was set to mixed. now set to n
width was set to 20. now set to auto
i have turned off 5ghz as have no devices that can use this frequency
changed transmit power from high to medium
changed wan port speed from auto to 1000
turned off both multicast stream

results are now nearly 50Mbps

After alot of testing i am getting a speed of 30mbps upload & download on wifi when my laptop is in the same room as the router. I am sort of happy with the wifi speed accepting that i will get a big speed loss from my speed that i get on my desktop pc connected via ethernet cable to the router, the speed i get is 90mbps upload & download. If you think i could get a better wifi speed than 30mbps please tell me what i should do to improve.
When i leave my lounge (where the router is located) and go to my bedroom (just 2 walls apart) i get a further speed loss, getting a upload & download speed of 5-10mbps. I am not very happy about this as one of the reasons I choose this router was because dlink advertise that it will cover the whole home with ease.

I am thinking about buying a wireless extender to put in my bedroom but I read that wireless extenders are all very poor in performance. What are your thoughts on this?

It could be that the HW on the LT may not be able to attain those sustained speeds. There are many factors between wireless and wired speeds and many differences in HW as well. I don't recommend speed testing wireless due to these factors. As long as wired connected are achieving your paid ISP speeds, you'll know that the services and router is working well. Wireless can achieve those speeds however it's dependent upon configurations and what the actual HW supports and is designed to do. Example, So if you have a Iphone, they are rated at 65Mb on 2.4Ghz N mode connection rates, Since your ISP services are 90Mb, the iPhone would never report or be able to test at the 90Mb speed due to it's limitation.
