I just purchased a Linksys WRTU54G (Router 2) from T-Mobile. I have a DIR-655 (Router 1) currently installed, connected to a cable model. Both have DHCP enabled. Here is my situation:
1. When I connect Router 2:WAN <---> LAN:Router 1. Everything works fine. The installation manual for the Linksys indicates that when its added to an existing network, it detects if the two routers share IP address 192.168.0.1 and it changes the address to 192.168.24.1.
2. When I reverse the connection, i.e., I connect Router 2 to cable modem, and connect Router 1:WAN <---> LAN:Router 2. I cannot get to the Internet via Router 1. The DIR-655 log contains a message that the "LAN address acquired via DHCP conflicts with address obtained via Internet."
I read several posting that describe how to make the DIR-655, an Access Point, by incrementing its IP address by one, disabling its DHCP server and connecting it to a second router LAN <---> LAN. I tried this and it works.
I am wondering, why is it that can I successfully connect the Linksys:WAN<-->LAN:DIR-655 both DHCP enabled. But I can't reverse the order of the routers, keeping them both DHCP enabled.
The reason I want to switch them is that T-Mobile recommends that Linksys router be closest to the cable modem in order to improve voice quality.
