Firmware upload fails
« on: July 14, 2014, 06:18:48 AM »

Hi,

I can not manage to upgrade firmware on my DNS320 REV B.

Original Firmware is 1.00 from 2012 and I want to upgrade it to 1.02 (downloaded file "DNS-320_B2_FW_1.02 for WW" from DLINK ftp)

I tried using Firefox and got what looks as an error message:  "413- Request Entity too large"

I tried with IE8: display is refreshing every second without any evidence something is going on (DNS ON/OFF led switches off...)

Did anybody had this issue?

Thanks for your replies

A couple of things.

First, exactly what is it that you need that is in the new firmware?  I ask because we see too many people bringing in equipment for repair because they thought the latest update was what they had to have, until something broke.

Second, I assume you downloaded the zip file, if so did you check it - that is, make sure it unziped without any problems and do the CRCs check?

If there is a need to use the new firmware please describe exactly what you did that got you to the error message.

Also MAKE SURE you have a backup of your data before you proceed any further.  It is much better to have a backup and not need it than not have it and lose everything.

Hi alex,
Is there any chance you forgot to unzip the file first?

I am sure I unzipped the file. By the way, is there any extension for these files because it is not really clear with extracted file name.

Thanks for helping

alex, if you downloaded a file DNS-320_B2_FW_1.02 with a length of 35,436,652 (last few numbers depends on how your OS rounds things up) you need to rename it with a ZIP extension and then unzip it to get the firmware file DLINK_DNS320B.1.02b1(3.11.0423.2014) This is the one that you need to use to update your NAS.

Hi Ivan,

My first attempt to update the firmware was with this file that I have downloaded from DLINK official FTP. It generated the error message about size with Firefox.

In fact, I tried all firmware available on DLINK official FTP but none of them worked with Firefox (same error message about size). I retried with almost all of them using IE8. No success.

I will retry with this version using IE8 but for me; it looks like a communication issue using webUI.

Is it possible to update firmware with wizard?

Thanks

Humm, windows has a mind of its own sometimes ;)  At least you got it updated but if your aim was to solve a 'printer not working' problem you could have saved yourself the PITA because the firmware does nothing to the print subsystem.

What make and model of printer are you trying to use?  I also assume that you installed the printer as a network printer on \\192.168.xxx.xxx\lp (xxx depend on your nas IP address).  If not then it is never going to work.

Hi Ivan,

my printer is a SAMSUNG M2020 type ( not the wifi version).
I tried both method proposed on this forum (the one that you mentioned and the other one through USB direct install then change port). No real succes but with this Seven reboot, it might be better. I will try later today.

Hi Alex,

Am I correct in assuming you are using win7 OS?  I ask because we have a laptop in for upgrade at work and Monday I will see what is needed to be done to connect it to a DNS-320 print server.

We had no problems connecting a couple of HP CLJ 3500 printers (1 on a DNS-323 and 1 on a DNS-320) to our lone XP install (running in a VM on one of our servers) that we use to check things work for clients.

Hello Ivan,

Yes I use Seven as OS. Error message that I get from system is that Samsung interface can not display printer status. I don't think this is critical but files stay stuck in printer job list.

In addition, the Samsung M2020 is a basic laser printer (personal type, low cost). The HP CLJ 3500 looks like much more smarter, at least it has a network port as mine is a simple USB type. I am afraid this printer is too basice to be managed by a print server.

Thanks for your efforts.

The HP CLJ 3500N is the one with the built in network the standard 3500 is USB which is what we use.

Now, a couple of things to check first.
Have a look at the CD with the printer and find out where the .inf file is - you need that information when asked to install the driver.
Make sure the printer is plugged in to the USB port of the NAS and is switched on.
You may have to uninstall the printer driver on your PC but I an not sure of this.

The procedure to install the printer as a network printer.
1) open Control Panel and select Devices and Printers
2) select Add Printer
3) select Add Network Printer
4) it should search for printers and when it finds' lp on DLINK-xxxxxx' you can stop the search (the xxxxxx is from the NAS defaults)
5) highlight the 'lp on DLINK-xxxxxx' and click next
6) on our test machine it cam up with no driver found and opened a select driver dialogue (if you still have the driver installed it will maybe find it)
7) assuming no driver found select have disk in the dialogue box, click next and select the cd and folder where the .inf file is, click next.
8) the driver is installed and you are invited to print a test page, do so and then click finish.
9) you should now have the printer appearing in the Devices and Printers panel.

NOTE:  The test page will give you the information on such things as printer name, port name and so on.  These are what you need to use when selecting the printer in the print dialogue of various programs.

The above worked for us with the HP laser and a couple of inkjet printers (a Brother and a Lexmark).  The brother does pop up a notice saying the print job has been sent to the printer but other than that we were unable to find any odd jobs left in the print spool folder.
