DLINKDDNS
« on: July 18, 2014, 08:34:00 AM »

Hi,
I don't know how many people are affected, but if you haven't got the email from DYN Dns service yet, DLINKDDNS users must "confirm" your account to continue to use the service.  You need the user name, password, and the serial number and MAC ID of the Dlink device that qualifies you for the free service.  Apparently, this information will have to be verified by Dlink to see that it is a valid Dlink device.  If you have changed emails since signing up for the service, you will not get this notice of course, but if you login to Dlinkddns, there is a "confirm account" tab, which I assume will prompt you for the device serial # and MAC ID.  If you don't do this, the service will apparently drop you in about 90 days.
There is also some troubling reference to most devices being eligible for only 6 months of free service....not sure what that means at this point, but if this becomes the limit for DLINKDDNS, then I really would like to request a firmware upgrade for most Dlink devices to support a couple more free DDNS providers.  Anyone else who has any additional info, please add.

I, too, got the notification last week and tried to update the info on Dyn web site without success. It keeps saying invalid MAC ID. my device MAC ID in only 12 characters, the Dyn wed site is expecting 17 characters. Any one have same issues?

Hi rhino,
I haven't done mine yet but as far as I know all MAC ID's are 12 digits.  The only thing I can think of is if you use "MACID" as the first part of the number.  This gives you 17 digits, but that is not part of the real MAC ID.  Worth a try, I will try to get to mine tomorrow.  Good luck.  If you figure it out, please post back.

Rhino, I just saw something it the DNS-320 forum about the MAC ID.  You must use the ":" between each pair of digits, i.e., 11:22:33:44:55:66.  This will give you the 17 digits they are asking for.

Kakashi,
Thank you for the link to DYN DNS site, but the information there is not substantially more than the information being received in the email.  Since you are an Level 3 Admin, perhaps you could actually get something official directly from Dlink.  Specifically, what Dlink devices are eligible for continued free service and what exactly is meant by "most devices are eligible for 6 months" of free service.  To the best of my knowledge, Dlink has always touted the free Dlink DDNS service as part of their product line for all Dlink devices that could use it, routers and NAS units, and their cameras.  This is especially troubling because Dlink's firmware gives only 2 options for DNS services, theirs and DYN DNS.
This has the uncomfortable smell of Dlink backing away from the "free" dlinkddns service.  Please provide Dlink's clarification.  Thank you.

I think my back and forth email to D-LINK says it all...

Re:  or a photo of the device’s label showing clearly: Serial Number (S/N), MAC address and Model Number.

Excuse me, but I did send you an attachment of this request - see attached on this email as well.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO D-LINK:

I am the owner of this DIR 655 and a loyal customer of D-Link.  I switched from LinkSys to D-Link because you have a superior product and offer this DDNS service to the DIR 655.

Why are you jeopardizing this relationship?

Take note that I am 20 years in the IT industry and am quite current on the power of blogs, forums, and social networks influencing brand reputation.

This is now the 3rd Case ID in the past week.  I expect this will be the final one on this matter.
You have my MAC, S/N, model #, my country, my name, and a photo of the complete label.

Now fix it, and advise me when completed.

Yours truly,

Kevin Dineen

FYI, this was posted here earlier this year:
http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Dyn-to-Shut-Down-DynDNS-Free-Service-128457

Includes links to DDNS site information about discontinued free support.

Good Luck.

Hi Furry,
I had actually seen and read this link before but went back and re-read it just a while ago.  Maybe I am getting too old, but I found only one post from a user indicating that his dlink.ddns.com account was still active but I could find no other links to Dlink or anyone else, which would explain what Dlink's policy was or is or is going to be.  If you or your "insider" have links or clear definitive information it would be nice if you could provide it to us.
There is apparently at least one Dlink router user and another gentleman with a DNS-320, which formerly had free dlink.ddns service who are now, without.  And with no other communication from Dlink except that their device information is not accepted by Dlink Support, and a suggestion to go to the forums for further clarification???  A bit puzzling to say the least.  Interestingly, the email received from Dyndns not dlink, mentions that "most" Dlink devices are eligible for only 6 months of "free" service.  A request from a Dlink ADMIN on the 320 forum for clarification remains unanswered after a few weeks.
The issue is clarity on Dlink's part, not silence.  Dlink Support is obviously checking the Serial Numbers / Mac ID against some type of list.  What Dlink devices which formally had dlink.ddns service will continue to receive it and for how long?  6 months or what?

Looks like I'm back to being a loyal customer!   ;D
D-Link fixed the S/N issue with my DIR-655:

Dear Kevin Dineen,

If you are registering for the first time, please go to dlinkddns.com Registration page  to register your product.  If you already have an existing account, please go to dlinkddns.com Confirmation page to confirm your product.

Due to a temporary technical issue with your S/N or MAC address, please use the following XXXblockedXXX as your serial number.  When entering the MAC address from your device, please ensure that the format is correct as exampled here, 00:24:01:F1:66:C8

This will be an interim serial number to allow you to sign up and start using the service.  Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Well, It looks like the one going away from providing "free Service" is their DDNS service provider Dyn.com NOT D-Link.
Assuming that Dyn may not want to renew D-Link's contract, since they have change their policies about free accounts, D-Link will just need to look for a new provider and begin the migration to the new service. They also have the option to adjust their DynDNS page setting in all of their products that support dynamic DNS to accept other providers, maybe noip.com (one of the best, if not the best in the industry) or other Dynamic DNS server provider (See List of Dynamic DNS provider including some that offer free service).

I don't think (and hope) this basic function will be remove from their products just because their provided has change their polices, it would just make no sense at all, way too many products that support it, routers, cameras, storage boxes, etc.  Yes, you only need one dynamic DNS account to get it all working from a single router, so as long as you can get that, we should be fine, but I think the best solution would be opening the setting to support any other dynamic DNS service providers. ;D (being hopeful here)

We shall see...
