Switching from Version A to Version C
« on: July 29, 2014, 01:41:45 PM »

I've been having some trouble with the wifi on my version A DIR-655 (which is 6 years old) so I figured it was time for a new router. I purchased the same DIR-655 but this one is the new version C. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to transfer the settings from the older router to the new one ... and if so, how do I do it? Thanks!!

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your routers? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded on each? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

I'd take screen captures of the old settings if needed. You can't save the routers config file and apply that to the new. There are differences.

The old router is version A3 with firmware 1.35NA.
The new router is version C1 with firmware 3.00.
I'm in North America (New Jersey).

Well if you think the old one is giving up then try to capture screen shots of it's configuration.

I'd re-load FW code or update to v1.37NA to see if maybe you could bring it back to life using this process:
FW Update Process

Enjoy the new Rev C.

Okay, I think I've got everything set up on the new router but I could use some help. For some reason my notebook and my son's computer which both connect wirelessly will only connect through the guest connection. Any help you can give me so that they can connect through the host connection would be greatly appreciated.

Be sure you have the main SSID WiFi set up with a unique name and your pointing your devices to that SSID. Turn OFF Guest Zone until you get your devices connected to the main SSID first.

Clear out any old WiFi saved profiles on the device then reconnect to the main SSID then save profiles if needed.

All devices should be able to connect to the main SSID with out problem using default settings.

Ensure any WiFi adapter drivers on devices are up to date.

Should I be using a different name for the network? I used the exact same one that I did on the old router.

You can use the same or try something different as a test to see if you can get things connected.

Looks like I got it ... the Pre-shared key in the profiles was all in caps. I changed it to lower case and now it works. Thanks for your help!
