"Wireless restarting" message in log - is this normal?
« on: June 18, 2009, 04:48:41 AM »

Started having my logs emailed to me and I am noticing the following:

[INFO] Wed Jun 17 17:46:31 2009 Wireless restart
[INFO] Wed Jun 17 16:43:51 2009 Wireless restart
[INFO] Wed Jun 17 16:16:25 2009 Wireless restart
[INFO] Wed Jun 17 14:57:50 2009 Wireless restart

I put 4 in there to illustrate the lack of a pattern in the times this message is logged.  Is this part of the normal operation of the 655, or should I be concerned?

Might not apply, but checkout my experience with wireless restarts.

Familiar with the post, but AFAIK does not apply.

PPPoE, PPTP, and L2TP internet connection settings have a Reconnect Mode: Always on - On Demand - Manual.

If you are already familiar with that setting then I will  :-X. Otherwise, take a peek.
Also, is your wirless set to always on or is it on a schedule? Sorry, gotta ask.

Oop, one more thing. Check your power settings for you NIC. Are they set to allow the computer to turn it off or is it set to Always On?

I'm using a cable connection, so don't think those apply

No problem in asking, I appreciate the help.  It is set to always on - I have no schedules on anything in the router.

Will change the power settings on my NIC, though it's counter-intuitive that a wired connection would affect the wireless interface.  I will report my findings.

ACKKK! I felt like you just dropped an anvil on my head. Undoubtedly, you have already covered what I am about to ask but if you would please indulge me. Are you always connected by wire but you are receiving messages that your Wireless is restarting? You have NO wireless NIC in your computer?

Sorry the anvil was getting heavy, and you didn't move quick enough.

PC is always connected by wire no wireless connectivity there -my Wii (that sounds so wrong) is my only wireless client and is configured for that internet 24 thing where it pulls the news and weather and other Nintendo related stuff periodically.

Do you have neighbors in the area with wireless?

The restarts could be caused by the router switching channels.

A cursory search shows some present with weak signals, tough there could be others like me who don't broadcast their SSID.

My use of the wireless interface is more often passive than not, so I haven't noticed a lack of availability. Bottom line: is this message a normal part of the router's operations or not?

Wireless system with MAC address 001CF06E435D associated
Wireless system with MAC address 001CF06E435D secured and linked

EDIT: Well, um, uh, having re-read your original post (that kinda, sorta, has the messages you are receiving in it), just maybe, perhaps the angle my thought was approaching has ricocheted off and hit me in the head - right where the anvil left off. I also have a Wii and it has a setting called "something something something" and it is related to the Wii 24 option. When momma Nintendo is not interested in talking to baby Wii, she turns off the wireless connection. When momma Nintendo wants to talk to baby Wii, it fires it back up, changes baby Wii's diaper and turns the wireless off again. I reserved an IP address for my Wii and I also added it to my list of allowed MAC addresses in the Network Filter which is probably why it refers directly to the MAC address in question. Maybe not. It's my uneducated guess. Do you use Network filtering? If not, why not? Do I have to come down off of my high horse and thump you? Ok ok, you don't have to reserve an IP address but if you are not using MAC address filtering, try turning it on (be sure to add your wired connection first!) and see if your messages don't change to what I showed above. If none of this applies, I deserve another anvil.

Jason, I presume that the MAC address you show is your Wii's MAC address? If so, did you setup your Wii's wireless connection? Agree to the "terms and conditions"? If you haven't set up your wireless connection, could be that it is trying to latch on to any wireless signal it sees and since that signal probably has security enabled it will not authenticate.

lol..After xmas I plugged the MAC into the router and pretty much forgot about it. Never knew it rebooted itself.
Yes, wireless connection only with the Wii. I had added the MAC & network IP into DHCP and was connected fine then locked down the WPS.

Did you go into the Wii wireless setup and input your network settings?
