Coming from an older 655 the software on the 880 is pretty but it is not user friendly. Why can't the software have a list style UI, along with the pretty one, where everything is on the pertinent page and can be accomplished in one step. I had to call "customer service" (snicker) just to accomplish setting a static IP address for a PC. Turns out you have to reboot the router to get the change to stick. Really??? I've tried to set others with no luck and gave up. Please tell me they're making a usable interface (the old UI on the 655 worked every time!) or this router is going back. It's actually working now but it's not set up the way I'd prefer. I still need to set up port forwarding but I'm too afraid to change anything, as I've already had to spend 1/2 day to get it to a half assed state.

Please, please tell me changes are on the way. I've been a D-Link fan for years but I wouldn't recommend anyone buy this router in its present state.

What Rev was the old 655?

As for the 880L, this is the new UI that D-Link is headed to we believe. The UI less complex that the older DIR series routers and may or may not be seemingly as intuitive to some users, however users should give themselves time with the UI to get to know it. It's not that hard and if you navigate around, you'll find similarities in feature location as with the old UI. Its just the face of the UI looks and feels different. There isn't any UI changes forthcoming that I'm aware of.

I presonally like the new look and feel. Easy to Reserve IP addresses and see that happening live on the status page. I wish they would bring back live connection rates between the router and wireless devices though. 

D-Link isn't the only one going with less complex UI and features. These are home class routers, so the focus is on the average home user and set up.

Thanks for the response but it's on its way back. Another round of useless responses from "customer service" and I was done. Hopefully the replacement fares better.

I did the same shift and I totally agree!
I can't really guess who the target user for this kind of UI is. I am pretty sure that the average user can't figure out any router settings at all anyways. Why not make the UI a bit more technical and deep. I don't need big blinking icons - I need all settings displayed and not covered by graphical concepts.

The new UI is for home class routers and based probably on the average home user which the majority of the population is used for. Most home users just want a router to work with not much set up hassle. Any advanced features or advanced users, should review, research or inquire with D-Link before buying a home class router to see if these model will meet there more specific advanced needs. There maybe other model routers that have more advanced needs for advanced users. D-Link and other router Mfrs are using more simplified UIs in there home router products. D-Link still has the older UI, however maybe moving away from that UI as time goes on.

I have to agree with Pete. Why can't the new UI have more advanced features and still be easy to set-up for the average user. Bought mine today. Why? Because I believe D-link delivers great quality products. The look and feel of the new interface is great but it's even less than basic. Very disappointing. Not even parental control can be configured like I want it. Wouldn't it be great if users could choose between the new UI and the old style firmware with the advanced features. That would make the 880l a winner.   When is the next firmware update planned?

Thank you for you're feed back. D-Link does have good products and going forward is exploring new things for new products. D-Link we presume takes many things into account regarding home class routers and is trying to take a more simplified use of the routers UI and features. Some users may find it different and maybe too simple to use. Users may need to find a slightly different way to configure the features that will help them with there networking needs. If users are concerned about the new look we encourage users to phone contact there regional D-Link support off and get help and further information regarding it. We do not know what comes in FW updates until it gets posted on D-Links web sites. As far as I know, this is the UI that will remain on the DIR-880L and maybe seen on other future model routers as well.
