local backups and windows 8.....
« on: August 04, 2014, 04:08:08 AM »

hi,
Sorry for my bad English, but i am french (nobody is perfect....lol)
I a have a DNS 320 firmware 2.03. I used this NAS with Windows 7 to make local backups (from my PC to the NAS). It worked perfectly! But, my PC is dead (RIP lol) ans i have a new one with Windows 8....and now, local backups doesn't work...  :( . When i test the URL, the answer is: failure.
Settings are they différents with Windows 8 ??? I have a NAT redirection in my box for port 80. Others redirections are they necessary?? Help me please to solve this problem!!!  ;D
thanks for your help!!!

You should hear my French - on second thoughts maybe not ;)

It would appear to be a windows networking setup problem rather than one involving the DNS-320.

As to what you need to do I am not certain because we do not have win8 here (we have just replaced our copy of XP with 7 running in a virtual machine to allow us to help clients).  One thing I do know is that the manuals supplied with French computers leave out such things as how to set up a network - they do tell you how to connect to the internet though.

It might help if you asked the question about how to make win8 visible on a local network on a local windows forum.

Everything else is working! i have acces to my NAS from everywhere (network and internet)...and only things that doesn't work are backups!! it is useful to have a NAS that can't make backups.........  ;D ;D ;D ;D   :( Grrrrrrrrrrrr!  :'(

OK, first thing to consider.  At the moment all you have to look at is your local network (anything to/from the internet uses a different set of functions and is mostly controlled by the router).

Writing/reading from your computer to the NAS requires that you have permission at the NAS and this is controlled by the CIFS/SAMBA settings and users/groups.

For the NAS to do the backup it requires permission to be able to read the hard disk of your computer.  What can and can not do that is controlled by how you have set up the access control list and the windows built in firewall.  A block by either the ACL or firewall will give you the error message you mention.

Where you find the setting for the ACL and/or firewall on win8 I do not know (every time we see win8 on a clients computer it is to replace it with win7).

You really do not want to hear my French ;)
