hey guys,

i have connected my external HD to the USB3 port on my DIR-868L. is there any way to access this USB drive through FTP? i am totally clueless

• What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

Not sure if you can connect a USB drive and connect to it via FTP. You can via SharePort and MyD-Link services. You can if you connected the USB drive to a dedicated PC and set up Virtual Server so that it points to the one PC with the connected USB drive.

oh and sorry, i know the sharepoint function, but i need to transfer a real large amount of files. I really like to do that by FTP

Ya, if your needing to xfer large size data files, I would recommend not using the USB function of the router and get into a NAS device such as D-Link DNS models. I have one and works better than USB which is inherently slow and can't handle speed performances like LAN connected NAS. I would suggest reviewing some NAS devices or consider using a dedicated PC maybe or put a USB to LAN converter on the USB drive if your wanting to use it like a NAS. USB will still be a bottle neck in any application.

too bad, i really don't understand that the USB3 functionality is limited to just sharing files in you local network and SharePort Webaccess it is just a simple firmware update that can solve this...

Kind of deals with some marketing of other D-Link products that provide FTP access to drive data. I'm sure D-Link has a fine balance between router and NAS products and doesn't want to take awake from some of the features found in NAS. There are some good NAS products out there and not to expensive either. I have the DNS-345, good unit, a bit more spendy however there are some cheaper models as well. I would recommend that if your doing some major file content xfers, you really should look in to NAS. That they are designed for and work well. I have FTP setup for my NAS when I need it.
