Hi,
I boxing with a issue and do not understand why my newer DIR-857 has low stability and the transmitting range is also not that good. I do understand there are some differences between the US and the EU type's but I was wondering if there are others recognize this type of "error"

D-Link says:
Dual Band Performance – Up to 450Mbps (2.4GHz) + 450Mbps (5GHz) to deliver fast wireless speeds and less interference for maximum throughput.

I thought that 857 could be a right choice for the future as a new alternative for my older DIR-655.

I've read some good reviews and information (on US but also Dutch sites) so on that base I've bought this newer alternative.

I know that external factors are influencing some figures and things but despite the fact that it is on the same spot in the below hallway this 857 is unstable for the 5 Ghz and the 2.4Ghz range is not that good.
The transmitting power not as expected.

That's why I've put the older 655 back on his place and start measuring both routers where possible on different locations in the house. I've used "WiFi Analyzer" app and there it was... the 655 is stable and range is OK but in the other hand the 857 shows that it is not.


Should the phrase "Gigabit Router" from the 655 be debet to this I guess not this are the 4 ports as also the 857 has. Is this 655 a better processed router? Is it the Firmware ? or type of producer...?
(According the app the 857 is mentioned "D-Link international" as producer reference and in the 655 there is "Cameo communications inc.") may it could be the internal antenna's which are not the good.
I've tested it with different laptop's/ mobile devices and smart led tv's newer and older types.

Please check also the pic's from the Wifi app... can anybody help me with this..?  What is wrong?

Is maybe possible to use this DIR-857 as an repeater...?

So I will put an cat 6 cable from of the 655 to the middle of the house... and connect the 857 so it has
a repeater function ?
But than I probably have a problem to get to the 192.168.0.1 as both uses this address?

• What region are you located?
• 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
• 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
• Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
• What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
• What wireless devices do you have connected?
• Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
• Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Router Placement

3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Have some homework to do... I'm from Holland, so Europe is the region.
I will check all the info you stated and try to handle accordingly asap.

Is the 857 returnable or is it beyond a refund?

Reason for asking is that this model router didn't get alot of development in the EU region and other EU region users expressed some problems with this model router. It's also hasn't seen any FW updates and will probably not any more.

If it's returnable, I would recommend one of the following from your region:

Something like the DIR-845L, 826L, for an N class router or if your wanna to future proof your system, maybe the DIR-868L or 880L, I have both of these routers and both are great routers. The DIR-826L is a great router too.

If your just needing some range extension for your current router, I would recommend something from this line:

No unfortunate is beyond refund. So have to deal with this a bit or sell it.

I read at that time some reviews and it seems everybody was happy with this on.. but unfortunate.
IMO the D-Link has not a quite good reputation in support in EU isn't it?
The Dir 655 is back on the wall and up and running like a sunshine, so very strange... but keep you posted with my trying...

Ya, it didn't get the development it should have like it did here in the NA region. Not sure why. Well you could do this with if you wanted too:
Turning a router into an AP.

Place it in a remote location for signal. You can run both units on WiFi, just have to make sure that each radio is using different channels is all. Can use same SSID and PWs.

Tnx, will try to put this 857 as a repeater for the second floor. as I don't get a refund... and selling for another is not my cup of tea if it's not an OK type of router...
I have also an older N1 Belkin router for the attic what is working good...
So than I have on 3 levels on router which should do the job.... 

We started with 1 or 2 computers in the past but In the meanwhile and over the last years all items like mobile phones/ laptops/ TV's/ Game-consoles/ HTS's ... all have a wired or wireless connection so it's busy as never before with Netflix/ YouTube as data eaters etc etc...

PS for future readers and references...
In the EU the DIR-655 with HW A4 & FW 1.31EU is much more stable and stronger in broadcasting on the 2.4 Freq. than the DIR-857 with HW A1 & FW v1.0... but the combo as red will do the job for sure

I found some FW in your region that may work for the 857. However if it's working well as an AP at this time then you may be good to go.

Well it works fine as een AP now... so on 2nd floor also have a good signal. 

My DIR655 on ch 6/ DIR857 on ch 1 and a Belkin N1 on ch 11 on the attick.
Now I'm boxing with the parental control of this DIR857 but as it is in AP mode with a CAT cable connection to the Dir 655 and the N1 also as a AP with a long Cat cable ... but this ain't gonna work 100%. This Par.control is buildin with DIR857 but this is a network issue and not specific for D-Link I guess.
Have to sort that out..

Tnx for possible FW... which do you have ? is that for EU if US?

The 655 is between -45 and -55 dBm when I'm on same level
The 857 is between -60 and -75 dBm on 2nd floor as I am on the 1st.
The N1 is between -70 and -80 on attick as I am on 1st.
The 857 is dropping on 5 Mhz constantly like a saw ( WWW ) between -80 and -100
so IMO useless to get a stable connection for streaming.
