as the title says after the router has been up for 24 hrs i have to reboot and reload my setting EVERY DAY and the connection has just gotten worse and worse. i know im gonna have to upgrade to a newer model eventually but is there anything i can do besides what ive been doing to get some more use out of this ancient thing?

YES before and after adn then set up from scratch
yes it was working up until about 2 months ago when it started getting choppy then horrible ping while more than 1 computer was gaming(1 playing LoL{Horrible ping- unplayable} and 1 playing a browser game- such bad lag couldnt play)

Cable internet 10 down 2 up net works amazing while plugged straight into the modem but once i connect the router everything started getting crappy

• Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS.
• Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
• Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
• Turn on DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
• Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
• Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
• If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
• Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
• Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
• Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
• WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
• Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. The DST setting is only needed in the NA region. Tools/Time.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations

• Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
• Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
• Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.

these are the good settings that only last about 24hrs.. after 24hrs it seems to just die and gets really laggy ping is horrible in LoL and in my other games i play i get rubberbanding really bad

for router placement the only thing close to it is a coffee maker but thats been there from the beginning when it worked aces.
and all 3rd party programs were off as well including myself being the only pc plugged in (slot 1)


the generic ideas seem to work but only for 24hrs,,, any ideas?

Only thing I can think of would be heat releated. So leaving the PC connected to the ISP modem for over 24 hours results in good internet?

yes running of ISP modem works amazing, but we both game so need a router, just this constant reloading of the settings and rebooting is very troublesome because it will start running like crap right in the middle o***ame without warning. and in that room since its summer time we have the AC on and it gets plenty of cool air as it is right near a vent.

Ya, I'm going to recommend that you step up to a DIR-655 or better router with better QoS engine since you are gamers. The 651 might be good for a single gamer or mom an pop kind of traffic. There are some basic routers out there that are ok however not as good for gaming. I have the 655, all 3 Revs and each one is good for gaming and are stable.

You need QoS engne with customizable settings like this:

If you want to so some future proofing, then maybe a DIR 8 series dual band router might be something to look at. I have a few and all are good with gaming too.

we went from a dgl-4300 to this DIR-651 for the wireless N capabilities.. since some of our wireless are G  and only a few are N would it be worth while to switch back?

Yes, you should switch back to the DGL as it's better suited for gaming. Also, since the 4300 is G only wireless, you could take the 651 and attach it to the 4300 as a wired AP giving wireless N mode using this:
Turning a router into an AP.

Set the WiFi mode on the 651 to single mode N, WPA2 and Auto TPIK and AES, manual channel 11. Set the DGL-4300 WiFi to single mode G on channel 1. You could use the same SSID and PW on both DGL and DIR, just ensure the channels differ as described. Or completely disable Wifi on the 4300 and use the 651 in wired AP mode for both G and N modes.

well i now know why we bought the 651, after about 2 hrs of headaches the 4300 officially needs to be put in a freezer to work longer than 30 sec properly... it starts testing the network speeds and just dies saying please try again, seems to get hot and wont route anything but my dieing cries for pity . but that is for a different section and thread.

if i ever get the 4300 working ill be sure to use the 651 as an AP

well atm it seems on the 4300 it was f/w 1.9 that was the issue but only time will tell.. so far I've removed the cover so it gets more airflow and I've put 1.8 on it; will see how stable it is and if there's any issues ill be going to 1.7.. now just time to wait and see

in a week or 2 ill update on progress maybe using the 651 as an AP will work out better

Ya heard that v1.9 didn't work for some people.

If you disable WiFi on the 4300, should operate cooler maybe.

since the last time ive started to use the 4300 only now after loading the 1.8 onto it.. but as for the 651... i think maybe a shallow grave might be the right place for it as even with the faster speeds we have now it just cant keep up and the latency is horrible compared to the 4300

Glad you resurrected the 4300. Ya it's a good router for sure. I never had the opportunity to try one before I got the 4500.
The 651 should be ok however it was a low end model router and didn't get much development love I think and wasn't really meant for hard core gaming. You could do this with it if you wanted:
