DWR-921 4g router port forwarding
« on: August 27, 2014, 12:53:22 PM »

Hello!

I have some problems with forwarding ports on a D-Link DWR-921 4g router.

What I want to do is forward two different ports to port 80 on two different internal IP-adressess. I can't change the internal port numbers (port 80) because it's embedded software in some measurement equipment. I take an example to explain. Assume that the routers WAN-IP is 8.8.8.8 and the internal IP's is in the range 192.168.0.X.

Then i would like to do two port forwards like this:
8.8.8.8:1000 -> 192.168.0.2:80
8.8.8.8:2000 -> 192.168.0.3:80

But then i run into problem. When i try to save this configuration the DWR-921 says that I can't have the same server port. I tried the same configuration on my own home router (a d-link dir-655) and there it seams to be ok (no complains when saving config).

Any help to solve this issue is appreciated.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Since port 80 can only be configured for one rule, you may need to use Virtual Server as an alternative if you have more than one configured needed for port 80. PF can only handle one port per device. Check the User Manual for Virtual Server features. Some products may not have this...

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Hmm... it's under the Virtual Server section I'm doing my portforward-config on the DWR-921. This is the only place (as far as i can see) where you can do port forwarding on the DWR-921. On my home router DIR-655 there is both a section named Port Forward and a section named Virtual Server, but the DWR-921 only have the Virtual Server section.

I live in sweden and have a mobile broadband connection from telia connected to the dwr-921. It's just a 3g/4g simcard that i put directly into the dwr-921, so no external modem.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

It seems like I got the port forwarding to work as I want now.   :)

I have the following rules under the Virtual Server section:

8.8.8.8:1000 -> 192.168.0.2:80
8.8.8.8:2000 -> 192.168.0.3:80-81

I still can't choose only port 80 for both port forwards, but it seems to work with this configuration after I changed the embedded software in the measurement equipment to use dhcp (used static IP's before).

Awesome, glad you got it working. Ya, PF only allows for one port at a time per one device IP address. VS allows for a range per a device IP address.
Thank you for sharing.

Enjoy.  ;)

I still don't understand why it didn't work with static IP-adresses.... strange.

Maybe that forwarding operations needs reserved IPs on the router so the router can handle and mange the addressing and forwarding operations. When you use static ON devices, maybe this somehow prevents correct forwarding operations from happening.  :-\

Yes, that may be the case. The only thing I'm a bit worried about now is what will happen if the router gets powerless or reboots. Will it assign the same IP-addresses to the devices? I guess there's no guaranty for that, but hopefully that will not happen so often. Maybe I should restrict the DHCP-range in the router to just cover two IP-adresses, as there are only these two measurment devices on the network.

IF you set reservations on the router, the router will and should keep these same reservations regardless of a power outage or power cycle. Only if you do a factory reset, will you lose the reservations. Unless you save the configuration to file which is recommended for back up in case you do have to factory reset.

Just checked and unfortunately the DWR-921 don't seem to have any options for DHCP-reservations, but thanks for the advice. That would have been perfect.
